no sound output device on ubuntu 14 on Dell inspiron 15

Asked by Simon sz

I have ubuntu 14.04, on a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series.
The sound output had just disappeared. I had a faulty jack converter, so now when I introduce the jack it is not asking me if I have a headphone or headset.

I tried some of the hints mentioned here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
But no change.

On pavucontrol I can see the the vumeters moving, but still no sound. All faders are up.

Thanks,
Simon

No, your Email client chopped up the original command into invalid pieces.....

Use a webbrowser to visit this website:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/525073

Copy-paste the command

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh

into the Terminal. Do NOT cut it into pieces!

When it asks a question, choose "Upload/Share".

Give us the generated URL at the end.

The sound card seems to work right now. After a few reboots, it started
to work.
