I should also add that I am running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in a VirtualBox VM. I had a problem with my current state yesterday and reverted to snapshot that was about a month old. I've been restoring files, cherry picking, and vowing to never have to revert to a snapshot that old again!

Yes. It's significant. Did you install the guest additions?
Do you have sound enabled in the configuration of the virtual system?

Yes, I do have guest additions installed. I also ran apt-get update and upgrade and subsequently VBOXADDITIONS_
Also, I do have audio enabled.

So, it seems that I've been able to fix the problem by doing the following:
1. While my Ubuntu VM was shutdown I went into the sound settings in VirtualBox, unchecked the enable checkbox and then booted into Ubuntu. As you would expect, I still have no sound.
2. Shutdown the Ubuntu VM again and then checked the box to re-enabled sound in my VirtualBox settings and then booted Ubuntu.
3. Still, I do not have sound but, from the command prompt I was able to start the sound server manually by typing
sudo pulseaudio
At this point sound works for me! I still don't know if pulseaudio will automatically start for me when I reboot, so I may still have to do more configuration, but we'll see.
Another issue was that the volumn indicator in my taskbar was not showing. I found an article at https:/

I continued following the steps in the article, installed indicator-sound and ran
killall unity-panel-service
And Voila, I have a sound indicator!
