I should also add that I am running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in a VirtualBox VM. I had a problem with my current state yesterday and reverted to snapshot that was about a month old. I've been restoring files, cherry picking, and vowing to never have to revert to a snapshot that old again!

Yes, I do have guest additions installed. I also ran apt-get update and upgrade and subsequently VBOXADDITIONS_5.1.6_110634/VBoxLinuxAddiotions.run script to update guest additoins.

Also, I do have audio enabled.

So, it seems that I've been able to fix the problem by doing the following:

1. While my Ubuntu VM was shutdown I went into the sound settings in VirtualBox, unchecked the enable checkbox and then booted into Ubuntu. As you would expect, I still have no sound.
2. Shutdown the Ubuntu VM again and then checked the box to re-enabled sound in my VirtualBox settings and then booted Ubuntu.
3. Still, I do not have sound but, from the command prompt I was able to start the sound server manually by typing

    sudo pulseaudio

At this point sound works for me! I still don't know if pulseaudio will automatically start for me when I reboot, so I may still have to do more configuration, but we'll see.

Another issue was that the volumn indicator in my taskbar was not showing. I found an article at https://itsfoss.com/fix-missing-sound-indicator-applet-ubuntu-1404/ that gave me the solution. In fact, I received and error message identical to the one in the article:

> In oreder to work properly, Unity Tweak Tool recommends you install the necesary packages.

I continued following the steps in the article, installed indicator-sound and ran

    killall unity-panel-service

And Voila, I have a sound indicator!

BTW, I need to fix a typo. In the error message quote, com.canonical. should have read com.canonical.indicator.sound
