Add printer not available 14.10

Asked by TonyR

I cannot use my network printer in Ubuntu 14.10 because the add printer button the printers applet is grayed out. I see the message "Printer services is not available" however how do I start the printer service and why is it not running by default?

If you are using Unity she'll, search for the word 'print' in the Dash.

Alternatively press ALT + F2 and run:

system-config-printer

Hi

The problem is not that I cannot find the printer applet, the problem is
that when I start the Printers applet the Add Printer Button is disabled
and the Start Service button is disabled.

How do I start the printer service and why is it stopped?

Kind Regards

Anthony

Hi

Well following running this command I now can select the add printer
button that was previously greyed out and the error about printer
service not running has disappeared. I will admit I have not yet
printer a page as there seems to be no driver for my Canon Pixma iX6860.

Here is the output you requested:

root 669 1 0 19:43 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/cupsd -f
root 937 1 0 19:43 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/cups-browsed
anthony 2661 2611 0 19:55 pts/3 00:00:00 grep --color=auto cups

Many Thanks

Anthony

Looks OK. Do you find other users online have this problem?

You can always add a printer using http://localhost:631

Can you help with this problem?
