I would try resetting the computer or going to your local computer fixer (you might be able to find one in a nerby mall) and have them find out what the problem is.

Another sugestion I would try updatiing to the latest software (10.4.1 LTS) and see if that bug is fixes if not then this guy (1st link) had a similar problem.

Also,
I speak Spanish and this result was worked well for many people:
"Probaste presionando ALT + F2 y escribiendo:
gnome-control-center sound
Espero te sea de ayuda, saludos."
That Trasnlates to;
"Try pressing ALT + F2 and writing;
gnome-control-center sound
I hope that helps you, Good Luck!"

@Rafa: There is no such thing as a silver bullet that solves all sound issues in Ubuntu. So there is very little use in trying to offer people a "silver bullet", when we have practically no information about the user's sound issue.

We need a LOT more detailed information before trying to attempt to solve this issue.

Furthermore, there is no such thing as 10.4.1 LTS. There is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 14.04.1 LTS and 14.04.2 LTS, but NOT 10.4.1 LTS.

Can you help with this problem?
