Please try this solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/680844/comments/6

So please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. Using the gedit editor, ADD the following lines to the end of the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad

3. Using the gedit editor, REMOVE the following line in the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop position_fix=1 enable=yes

4. SAVE the change to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

5. reboot and retest sound using headphones and speakers

OK nice! that fixed the headphone issue, but the mic jack is not working,
and in sound settings, input, there is no device listed

Yes, the neither on board mic, or mic jack works, but the headphones do
work now, and the internal speakers shut off when you plug headphones in.
Half way there.

Try:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa; sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds then reboot

You don't get feedback, just type the password of your user. PLEASE copy the command as one, so you don't butcher it. I gave the command as one so you should run it as one

@Brian: please do not copy-paste commands via your Email client.

Use your browser and go here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/204987

Copy-paste the command at that location using your webbrowser, NOT your Email client.

Your Email client will incorrectly chop up the command into invalid pieces....

OK, I tried it again and it went differently this time, and appeared to successfully buy unpacking files and such. I am going to reboot and see if that helped, but I wanted to paste what it did just in case, so here it is:

I see you installed Maverick initially. Did you upgrade directly to Oneiric? Or did you upgrade to Natty then to Oneiric?
