incorrect model option "model=laptop position_fix=1 enable=yes" -> Codec + Mixer: Conexant CX20585 - card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog] - Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) 1002:4383 (rev 40) - speakers working, but internal mic and headphones not working on TOSHIBA Satellite L655D in Ubuntu 11.10
I have ubuntu 11.10 and my mic jack doesn't work, my headphones don't work, the built-in mic doesn't work, but I do get sound out of the speakers. It's a Toshiba laptop L655S or somehing. It has a reatek conexant audio card. I'm sure this is a very common problem. Can anyone help me. What do I need to uplaod to help you help me?

So please try this procedure:
1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
2. Using the gedit editor, ADD the following lines to the end of the
/etc/modprobe.
# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
3. Using the gedit editor, REMOVE the following line in the
/etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop position_fix=1 enable=yes
4. SAVE the change to the /etc/modprobe.
5. reboot and retest sound using headphones and speakers

Yes, the neither on board mic, or mic jack works, but the headphones do
work now, and the internal speakers shut off when you plug headphones in.
Half way there.

Ok we're making progress. I now have a device on the input tab of sound
settings. The bad news is that it still doesn't get any sound coming in. It
records nothing

I changed the Hardware settings to Analogue Stereo Duplex and now the
onboard mic works, but when I plug in mic to mic jack then I get nothing
again.
