The SYSTEM SETT. -> SOUND shows the following
   HRDWR -- nothing
OUTPUT -- Dummy Output (stereo) Vol 100%
APPLICATIONS -- none playing
The sound icon at the top shows VOL MAX

Test sound output during a LiveCD session in Ubuntu 12.04. If it works during the LiveCD session, then install 12.04.

I tested 12.04 in LiveCD and the sound worked
so I went ahead and installed and everything works fine

solved by installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
