No, I am using the simple set up with stero speakers and a woofer. The
sound system works well with my XP computer.

Thank you for your help.

Mark,

I did as you suggested. Still no sound. I am not that good with the
terminal, but I can follow directions, and did as you said.

The one peculiar thing I have noticed is that when I click on the little
loudspeaker in the upper right corner of the screen it comes up with the
word mute, but the volume control is well over 50%. When I click to
have it say unmute the volume goes down to zero. If I increase the
volume with the mouse it automatically goes to mute. I also went to the
sound settings and made sure that the mute was not checked.

Is there anything I have done wrong, or is there another problem? If
this were MS I would look for an IRQ conflict or I would reinstall the
driver.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Mark,

I am at a stand still. I have the disk witht he drivers for the sound
card on it. However, I don't know if the problem is the driver, or some
other conflict. You have the report on my system. How do I find out if
there is an IRQ conflict, or how can I reinstall the sound drivers in
ubuntu? The driver disk which came with the mother board only specifies
MS windows installations.

Thank you for your help.

Please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal

Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In the gedit editor, scroll down to the last lines of the alsa-base.conf file and add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file (with the file open inside the gedit editor!):

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=targa-2ch-dig

Step 3: Reboot pc and retest sound using both headphones and speakers.

Step 4: If sound is still not working after a reboot, replace the targa-2ch-dig model option with one of the options below and then reboot and retest sound again.

I have tested several options and as of now no good results. Here is
