Thanks for answering me,
I am newbie in linux configuration
I installed alsa driver 1.0. 24 in ubuntu 2.6.38-10 generic
doing- following Ubuntu community guide 'SoundTroublesh
sudo apt-get update&& sudo apt-get -y --reinstall install alsa-base alsa-utils; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*
Result:
In synaptic 'alsa-base' and 'alsa-utilities' are marked as installed
But in the ALSA Information script
soundcard is _mentioned as installed_ _but not recognised_
Audio Information of MSI motherbord vendor:
- AC'97 link controllerinteg
- 6 channel audio codec Realtek ALC883
- Compliance with AC97 v2.3 Spec.

Your ALSA driver is not installed correctly.
The following Terminal output proves this:

Please copy-paste the following 4 commands one by one into a Terminal, pressing <ENTER> after each command:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install aptitude
sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-
killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*
Then reboot your pc and retest sound output using headphones and
speakers.
If that does not help, then I suggest booting an older kernel version in
the grub boot menu...

I followed all:
- changed to an older kernel version - from ubuntu-
ubuntu-
- did all proposed commands one by one - each followed by ENTER
- rebooted my pc
Result: sound card was recognized but did still not work
Btw: in my installed windows xp sound is working flawlessly
See my attachments (copied from terminal and pasted-saved in gedit) for:
- output of the proposed commands in the terminal
- creation and output of ALSA information script
- output of find /lib/mpdules/ 'uname -r' | grep snd
- output of aplay

Please proceed with the following procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Terminal"
Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Add these 3 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file and save the changes:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell
If the 6stack-dell model option does not work, try each of the following model options one by one (NOT several model options at the same time!) and reboot+retest sound after every change to the alsa-base.conf file:

Reboot pc and retest sound using headphones AND speakers.
Please make sure to test sound on both the internal speakers and headphones on ALL audio ports located on the back of your motherboard.
