it seems that every things is ok on my system (ubuntu 9.1 header - 22) but I can not hear no thing
nor startup sound and neither sound that plays with my player and even no sound by aplay command.

please help me

This is a known issue with the ALC887 sound codec.

See the following bugreport for details:

Please run the following command in a Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

ADD the following single line using the gedit editor:

options snd-hda-intel model=generic

SAVE the change to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then REBOOT and retest sound using headphones and speakers.

After rebooting, make sure all channels are UNMUTED and volume set to 100% in alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer

2- I tried to update alsa but I got this error

The problem is that your ALSA driver was having issues with probing the ALC887 sound codec in your soundcard. In order to help ALSA a little, we pass the model option model=generic to the ALSA sound system so that ALSA can successfully configure the sound card and set up the mixer settings for ALC887.

The following terminal output (in this specific case) gave me a hint on what the ALSA issue was:

amixer: Mixer hw:0 load error: Invalid argument

There is no point in sending this solution to your friends, as almost each sound issue is unique and depends on a LOT of different variables (hardware configuration, software versions, ALSA misconfiguration issues, muted mixer channels, etc....)....

Each individual issue needs to be analyzed in detail and on a case-by-case basis. It is impossible to generalize....

Please set this thread to status 'solved", if the sound issue is still solved.

Some cards need options in the file, it just takes some websearching. Mark is BADASS at this sort of thing so probably has a fuller description but when the module gets loaded it uses no options, the file just told it to work slightly different which is what your soundcard needed.

I suggst you archive the setting, or how to change it so if you need to reinstall you can reinstate the change
