Setting up intel 8x0 soundcard on d865glc (Ubuntu 10.04)

I'm trying to set up the soundcard (intel 82801eb/er ich5 controller hub). I have no sound in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04). I have tried to follow the Ubuntu basic troubleshooting guide. The sliders work and Alsmixer is unmuted. I'm in the sound group. The system recognized my sound card. The sound modules are installed. The card is physically installed and recognized by the hardware. The sound card seems to be supported, however, when I pur in "sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0" then "WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release." is displayed. I'm not sure what the difference between analog output and analo output (LFE). When I use the pulse audio volume meter (playback meter) the volume is displayed as going up and down.

The speakers have been tested on another PC and are connected in the middle (green) line out jack. Headphones do not work.
I'm not sure if the sound worked before with old XP OS.

Any help, advice, or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I used gnome-alsamixer increase volume & unmute with no luck. I'm glad this was suggested because I previously did not put a check mark in the following boxes: Mix, Exchange Center/LFE, Exchange Front/Surround, and Spread Front to Surround and Center/LFE.

I checked those boxes and tested with no results. I rebooted and the boxes in alsamixer were now unchecked. I unmuted, raised volumes, and checked suggested boxe. I tested again with no results.
One level I was unsure of was the "line" setting. I didn't know if this should be muted or not (although tested both ways with no positve result).

Mark, thanks for taking the time to look over those outputs, making suggestions, and telling me about tatt bug. Hopefully, a solution will come up, but I can still compute without the sound.

I guess I could try purchasing an inexpensive 6-channel sound card. I also have a very old modem with a line-out jack (Communication controller: Intel Corporation 536EP Data Fax Modem). I wonder if those might work. I don't know why this card has jacks on it.

I have one last suggestion to make concerning this sound issue.

The following output you sent us, seems to indicate that there might be a conflict between 2 different audio drivers that are loaded at the same time and that each driver may be preventing the other driver from working correctly:

snd_ac97_codec 100600 2 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0
snd_page_alloc 7076 3 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

I believe that the snd_intel8x0m module driver may be preventing the snd_intel8x0 driver from correctly controlling your audio chip.

Please open a Terminal and copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

In the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, please add the following single line at the end of the file:

blacklist snd_intel8x0m

Then save this change to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, then reboot and retest sound using both headphones and external speakers.

I blacklisted snd_intel8x0m, rebooted and did "sudo alsaconf". When I did the sudo alsaconf, it gave me a choice of soundcards; intel 8x0 Intel Corp82801EB/ER ICH . . .
legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips
I guess I was supposed the choose the Intel, but that didn't produce sounds.
I'll try again with the legacy.

I didn't try the Legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP0 chips soudcard if it even is a soundcard because it said it may make my system unstable.

Back to something way back,when I put in "sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0" then "WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release." is displayed.

I wonder if this means that I'm in the wrong directory and, therefore, doesn't turn on the soundcard. Or maybe everything is already past that point.
