Uninstall... Error

Asked by Chris

I am sorry to be posting for help on this...i am just not technical enough to use ubuntu. Here goes my problem! I have three hard drives on my computer. I have one harddrive with Windows Xp pre-installed with my computer. This hard drive is partioned with a Recovery section and then the Normal part. I added another harddrive that was blank for storage. Then that filled up and i added another hard drive. When i added the third hard drive i decided that i wanted to try Ubuntu. I made a cd version and installed it to the Blank hard drive. No problem. Then i decided after using ubuntu for a while that i did not like it. I re-formatted the hard drive that i installed ubuntu on. Here is where the problem starts. I couldn't restart into windows because i kept getting an error about Grub loading...Error 18. I reinstalled Ubuntu and was able to start back into Windows but i cant get rid of Ubuntu so now i have dual boot options...How do i uninstall Ubuntu and keep from getting this error? Please help...I hate having to select which os i want to boot to, especially since i don't use Ubuntu.

My Computer didn't come with a recovery CD. It came with a recovery console built into Xp, oh and i forgot to tell you. It doesn't work anymore with Ubuntu. Normally i can get to it when the computer boots up i can press F10. It doesn't respond anymore? I am able to get to a different version of recovery mode from my start menu!

Hello Chris,
Is there a possibility to type different commands can you start fixmbr
on your machine? But attention use fixmbr with the linux partition not

From Windows Xp i can't even see the hard drive. It doesn't show up anywhere. Do you want me to be logged into Ubuntu?

Just enable the boot flag of your first hard disk and disable that of the third. There are plenty of tools in WinXP that allows you to do so, or use a LiveCD (ubuntu, knoppix, you choose).

For instance using the Ubuntu LiveCD:

Boot from the LiveCD, open a terminal and give this command:

sudo parted /dev/hda

(or use /dev/sda if SATA disk). parted will start and tell you:

GNU Parted 1.7.1
 Using /dev/hda
Welcome to GNU Parted! Type 'help' to view a list of commands.
 (parted)

You can use these commands (help will list all):

print (it will show you the partitions)
set 1 boot on (it will make partition 1 bootable)
print (again to check it)
quit

Repeat with the 3rd hard disk (this time to disable the boot flag).

reboot and check if problem is solved....

Can you help with this problem?
