Ubuntu 7.04 doesn't load on Dell Inspiron 5100

Asked by Chris Monahan

I have downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 for i386 desktop and burned a CD. The MD5 Hash was correct (as shown in the Ubuntu Hashes documentation).
I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop.
On powering up the laptop, Windows loads as it always has. The Ubuntu disc is ignored.
I tried remedies included in the "BootFromCD" problems.
One solution included in "BIOS is not set to boot from CD or DVD drive" is to enter DELETE when the computer is first booted. I tried that without success.
Are there other ways of getting the laptop to boot from the burned Ubuntu CD?

You have to enter the BIOS setup and change boot priority so that the system will attempt booting from the CD first.
To do that is machine specific, you should know which key to use on your machine; it is usually displayed during POST.
With Dell, it could also be F10, F1 or the F2 key (most probably for the 5100 is the F2 key).

Yes, the problem is solved and I am now able to boot from CD. You were correct in that F2 was the key to press to interrupt the POST sequence.
