user lists

Asked by massimo

Hi

I need help with the following.

In my configuration file i do not have the option to set users. I can get into the user files but in what format do i put the users.

I also need to know how i find out what the address of my FTP server is for people that want to connect externally.

If there is comprehensive documentation that can help me with this were can i get it, if not help.

Are there any good books for doing this.

Hello Massimo,

what kind of server is your server? Did you installed a ftp server on your machine and should be this machine available from other clients? or is your server a machine with an fixed IP? or what?

Hi

It is the vsftpd server that is installed. The machine is connected to a
switch and the switch to a DSL modem. IP addresses are assigned
automatically and the IP address from the ISP is not fixed.

Kind regards

Hallo Massimo,

with an dynamic IP you need an additional service which register your IP's and make the server under a name available. One service is www.dyndns.org
the service description is available on
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
a possible linux client is on
http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/

For DynDNS, ddclient is already available:
http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/08/updating-dynamic-ip-address-automatically/

You can install it from the ubuntu repositories by doing a

$sudo apt-get install ddclient

and configure it as neccessary. If you can’t find the public IP address, then you can have ddclient check your public IP address from the web by editing /etc/ddclient.conf and making it use the web by saying:

use = web

Can you help with this problem?
