No preferences or administrator options after installing xubuntu.

Asked by Alfonso Migliore

I used synaptic package manager in my ubuntu installation to install xubuntu. Now, under "Applications", "System", I have no 'preferences' or 'administrator' options available.

Apparently, I am in the xubuntu session. I have not been able to start a

Thanks

Xubuntu and Ubuntu are installed from two different CDs, but in general they use only different desktop packages. If you want to be able to have the gnome desktop (ubuntu) then install the package "ubuntu-desktop" from your package manager. Then you should be able to choose which desktop you want to use when you login.

I hope this helps

Alfonso when you are in the login screen you can change the session type, then select gnome and you will have the Ubuntu desktop

Is going to get a question if you want to keep this session or just for this session you can select keep to always use the gnome and test the xubuntu selec xfce and use just for this session.

You dont need install the ubuntu-desktop because you firts intalation was with Ubuntu.

After installing xubuntu onto my ubuntu installation, Synaptic Package Manager was no longer listed under "System".

I solved the problem using the Terminal with the command: sudo apt-get install synaptic

It worked. Synaptic Package Manager is now listed under "System" and I can again download/install programs.

I tried to install xbuntu with package manager in ubuntu, it will not apply changes.
It wants to delete totem_gstreamer movie viewer as well?

Can this be done or do I need a CD with xbuntu on it.

Sir,

When I installed Ubuntu about a year ago, I posted a question regarding a problem I had. But I am by no means qualified to attempt to answer your question. I don't know why my name is referenced as someone who would know the answer to the questions of others.

Sorry.
