question about audiobooks

What format are the audiobooks in? What file extension do they have?

I think VLC can play most of the formats that are out there

sudo apt-get install vlc

the file is .odm
not sure what the extention is
VLC does not play the file
I;ve transfered the file to a windows system and they work with the Overdrive Media Console but it world be nice to listen with Unbuntu
