What type is the file you want to play?

Try this on a terminal:
sudo apt-get install totem-plugins-extra

Try this on a terminal:
sudo apt-get install totem-plugins-extra.

want to play audio files (mp3) or videofiles any format(any format)
if u can give some versatile player.

"Couldn't find package totem-plugins-extra" this is what came when i run it on terminal.

on ubunt help site no link to xubuntu extra plugins
then
i tried installing xmms with out any result.

Yes you can install vlc open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install vlc

give your user password when requested, you will not see any screen back chars when you type it, then press enter

Hope this helps

if you want it complete install: xubuntu-restricted-extras via the package manager in xubuntu. vlc/mplayer/totem will play your files.

i think problem is with 7.10 as there is no up date of vlc for 7.10.
so it simply says "package not available".

"if you want it complete install: xubuntu-restricted-extras via the package manager in xubuntu. vlc/mplayer/totem will play your files."

if u could explane this more extensivly ,as synaptic package manager does not hv vlc/mplayer/totem extras.

if there is a procedure to download the package and install it manually in xubuntu 7.10

and sorry if my question are more armature like.

7.10 is not longer supported by Ubuntu, you should upgrade your system.
A LTS version: 8.04, or the newest version of Ubuntu: Karmic 9.10. :)

Go to the terminal, then type this in: sudo apt-get install vlc. The
terminal can be found in the applications -> accessories.

Vikram

in xubuntu 7.10 --in terminal when apt get install command is given .the response is "vlc package not found".
i think vlc package is not included in xubuntu7.10 .
i hv downloaded vlc package but hv no idea how to install manually in with terminal.

a .deb package can be installed by double clicking the package, or rightmouse===> open with gdebi.
but again 7.10 is not supported anymore, you don't get any security's updates, ypu should upgrade your system, or install a new version of ubuntu: 9.10 Karmic.

I'm quite confused now in the original question you said you already have xubuntu 8.04 and after you talk about the 7.10 release...

Please copy and paste here the result of this terminal command:

lsb_release -rd

Thank you
