Version Karmic Koala.
Today couple of times system rebooted itself.
I did a system update, but after pressing the check button, I got the following message:
W: GPG error: http://archive.canonical.com karmic Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <email address hidden>

Any ideas about whats going on.

I have the same problem but entering the codes above in the terminal did not fix the problem. I am new to linux, and just installed ubunto 9.10 on the past few days; have i missed something from actionparsnip's suggestion? Any laternative solution, please help.

I am out of town, and have no access to my comp for the coming week. But,
the solution sent to me worked I remember. BTW, I am no expert on linux as
well.

Seems:

sudo apt-get clean; cd /var/lib/apt; sudo mv lists lists.old; sudo mkdir -p lists/partial; sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get update

Should do it.

The captioned error message has been resolved but executing :

 sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring; sudo apt-get update

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update
