Insufficient space on disk '/'(9.04) for upgrade to 9.10

Asked by Drissa Yilla

Trying to upgrade 9.04 to 9.10 I get this message -Upgrade needs a total of 1490m free space on disk'/'. Please free an additional 1439 of disk space on '/'. Empty your trash and remove temporary installations using 'Sudo apt-get clean.
I am getting error messages when trying to save files, and do not appear to have the partition editor utility in my system-administration area.

Try with

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get aoutoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove

If all of this doesn´t work you can download Gparted live Cd from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ and make bigger root with it.Of coursew you will have to shrink other partition to make place for root.

Thanks for your suggestion which gave me the following result (1) . I
then tried the download and got another '' Not enough room on disk
message'' I tried to use the partition editor on the live cd, but
became confounded.

Try this:
df -h
and post the results. (This is just to verify how much space you do/do not have.)

Then please also install and use bleachbit package to get more space...
but the best is to boot your pc from live cd and to resize your hard-disk partitions.

2.3GB total is definitely not going to be enough, so I'm afraid it is time for partition resizing (assuming there's some spare space elsewhere on that disk.) That's one of those "usually works fine, but back up all your data first" operations.

answers doesn't support attachments; if you click on my name you'll see my email address and you're welcome to send the screenshot there.

@ Drissa Yilla

Shrink partition next to ubuntu root ans then on that free space increase root partition. You can do it with Ubutu live CD or you can download Gparted live CD from
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ and to it with it.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Drissa Yilla for more information if necessary.
