Need a printer/scanner

Asked by heather michel

I switched from windows xp to ubuntu 9.4 and now my dell 968 (lexmark x9350) printer does not work at all. It is hooked up via a usb. I cant get a ppd driver out of lexmark and it appears from the printer list that it is a paperweight.
I thus need to find a printer for my small business that will print/scan/copy and maybe even allow wireless printing and duplexing? (that would be in an ideal world) for less than $200 (I know...)
Can anyone help me find one?? I have gone around and around. It seems like the printer lists on openoffice are all out of date, but maybe I am just not doing it right.
I would REALLY REALLY appreciate any advice on printer models that are easily set up and would do what I want for $200 give or take.
Thank you in advance!

Brother printers are fairly well supported and HP printers are pretty well supported. Each requires you to download drivers made for Linux, but have good support. I'm using an HP Officejet 6500 Wireless, which is a color printer with built-in scanner and fax. All (seem) supported with software drivers (haven't tried the fax, but it looks like it will work fine). Have also used Brother MFC5840, same capabilities.

The HP officejet 6500 wireless looks great! I could not find a ppd
driver on the hp website though. Does it come on the install disc or
where would I download it?

Hi,
some Ubuntu users have put down their experiences with printers here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters

And a maybe more complete database of printers here:
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/DatabaseIntro

And I found the above sites at https://help.ubuntu.com/ where an abundance of "official" and user collected help is available. Maybe for future needs.

I use a HP Officejet Pro K5400 with duplex unit (and built in lan adapter) and it works fine. (no scan/fax though)

Good luck.

Thank you guys, I can print now!!! lol
I still have some remaining issues on my Officejet 6500 wireless
printer...
I can print via USB, scan via the HP Device manage too. I cant seem to
scan by hitting the button on the machine... Tells me computer is not
hooked up. Also I used the tools button on the printer and the printer
can see/connect to the router, but if I unplug the USB my computer can't
see the printer anymore... Thoughts???
