Ubuntu 8.04 and XP dual boot after automatic updates

Asked by Pankaj Barah

Hi,

I had Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed in my Dell inspiron 1525 Laptop along with windows XP as dual boot. Today I have upgraded my Ubuntu to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Since then whenever I start my laptop, i never see the XP boot option and it shows 4 Ubumtu boot otion. I wonder if my XP is still there ? How can get back to previous XP with upgraded Ubuntu 8.04 Is there any way to recover it to XP as first boot option?

It is very uergent.

Thanks and regards,

Hi,

Your XP should be there. It's "only" the grub menu, which doesn't see it. Probably because you typed yes to replace the grub settings when upgrading.

There is a very good page for solutions to your problem:

Hmm, what you probably won't find there is the entry for your XP to insert into
/boot/grub/menu.lst

After the line:
## ## End Default Options ##

insert

title Windows XP
root (hd0,0)

chainloader +1

but please read the howto first. You could damage your bootloader, so that you can't boot any more.
(a backup of the menu.lst is always a good idea! And with a life CD you can always copy it back)

Sorry, it should have been the 3 lines without a blank line between them!

title Windows XP
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
