How do you convert files?

Asked by adrienneadams

A few months ago, I was using ubuntu open office, saved a file, and emailed it to myself. Apparently, I didn't save it the right way. I didn't know that I would run into a problem later on.

Now, I'm using microsoft word and when I try to download the document from my email, it gives me different languages/text options to choose from, but it all comes up as gibberish. What can I do? Have I lost this file forever? Do I have to download ubuntu again to gain access to this document?

Thanks.

Hello,

By default open office save the files in the "Open Document" format:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Document

To open your file, you can install open office on windows:
http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.1/index.html
