downloading dcp-130c brother printer

Asked by Sandra Monro

Hi,

I use Linux and Windows XP. I could not download the printer into Linux so used XP. I can print from XP but not Linux.

I send a document to print and the printer say receiving data the printer icon comes on then disappears. Nothing prints. The printer will download photos, which I can save.

Can anyone help me please.

Regards Sandra

Sandra,
I do not have one of these printers, but have dealt with Brother printers under linux in the past,s o maybe I can help.

First, I do not see the DCP-130c listed as one of the available drivers in the "New Printer" dialog... did you install any additional software to get this working, or did you give it another model?

Working under the assumption that the driver you have used is incorrect, these are the steps to follow...

Visit this URL:
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_wrapper_install6.html
Follow the instructions for Debian , but only as far as step 4. Once you get there, remove your existing printer configuration, and try adding it again, using the MFC-240 driver that should now be available.

Hope that helps!

Yes, I gave it another model number.

Sandra,
Let us know how you make out, or if you run into any additional issues with adding your printer.

Dear Matt

We have installed the drivers but the driver does not work during the
installation process. The installation process is not giving us the
choice of DCP-130C or the MFC-240.
Can you shed any light

Thanks Sandra

Matt, I am responsible for having set Sandra up with Ubuntu and am trying to help her install the new printer - unfortunately I'm quite some distance away and am having to do it by phone.

She has downloaded and installed the lpr and cupswrapper drivers as directed.

She has then removed all existing printer configurations (except for a different printer that's connected to lp0).

Now she goes through the System > Administration > Printing >> New Printer process, and the DCP-130C is detected as a local printer. But when she proceeds through the installation process, no DCP-130C driver appears; nor does an MFC-240 driver.

Where has the DCP-130C driver gone?

In trying to reproduce the process on my own system (also Edgy, but of course I haven't got the printer) I've downloaded and dpkg'd the two drivers and found that the DCP-130C .ppd file ends up in /etc/cups/ppd. Assuming the same has happened on her system, I assume she could force the printer installation process to attach the driver by using the "Install Driver" option in the choose-a-printer-model window?

Andrew,
That seems like a reasonable assumption. I have also pulled down and
picked through the two .deb files from Brother, and it appears that are
two other programs that you could take a look at, if the PPD file
doesn't work. They are named:

/usr/bin/brprintconf_dcp130c
(as part of the LPR drivers)

/usr/local/Brother/Printer/dcp130c/cupswrapper/brcupsconfpt1
(as part of cupswrapper)

I haven't run them myself, but they may be useful if the PPD route
fails.
