Have Dell Mini, cannot open applications

Asked by Lynn N.

I have a Dell Mini with Ubuntu. It is very confusing and I admit I do not understand how to use it as I am used to Windows.
I can no longer open the Applications menu but can open Places and System. It also says there is no disk space left.
I can't do a clean up if I can't get into Applications.
Is there any way to change from Ubuntu to Windows on a Dell Mini??

You could try to
1 right clic on Places
2 "Edit Menus"
3 look if there is an "Applications" in the left pane and if so, if any of the items in the right pane has a hook

Change to Windows?
In my opinion: if Ubuntu runs out of disk space (without having installed or downloaded huge applications and files) you would have a really small chance to install Windows. Windows is far bigger. Not talking about quality ;-)

Was Ubuntu pre-installed or did you install it?

sorry for the split answer:

If you want to remove Applications, you could do this from
System
  Administration
    Add/Remove Applications

no need for the Applications menu in this case.

OK...but I haven't added any applications and already transfered and deleted all photos that I temporarily downloaded while abroad.

So what applications would I remove?

Also, what is partitioning?? would that help?

thanks for your help!!

Applications to remove:
Hard to answer, because I don't know, what you want to do with your Mini:
For Example if you don't want to use an Windows Office like package, you could remove the complete OpenOffice Suite (try a search for openoffice )in Add/Remove Application

Before you begin to play with partitioning:
PLEASE BE EXTREME CAUTIOUS because this could lead to a unusable PC.

I, in your position would first look, if the Mini ran really out of space:
Applications
  Accessoires
    Disk Usage Analyzer

There are 2 lines like
Total file system capacity xy% 1005,1 GB (numbers vary!)
Total file system usage z% 3,2 GB

if the second line has more then 90 % then please tell me the numbers you get.

My friend,

I right clicked on Places and then on Edit Menus but nothing happened after
that. The Edit menus gave nothing!
Any other suggestions?
Sorry, it's been a crazy time at work and couldn't get back to this sooner.

Lynn

Also wanted to tell you that when I open administration, there is no option
to Add/Remove applications

I try to open the browser but an Alert comes up and tells me that Firefox is
already running but is not responding. To open a new window you must first
close the existing Firefox process or restart your system.
I do not see where Firefox is already running.
There is another Alert that says
Cout not initialize the application security component. The most likely
cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please
check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk
is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the
application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you
might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

I just don't know what to do in either of these situations!
the updated version of Firefox tries to load but it tells me there isn't
enough disc space. I don't know what I should do since I can't access
applications.

Thanks
Lynn

Hello Lynn,
no need for any excuses. We live in differnt time zones and we all have our "real" work to do ;-)

It seems, as if your account has not enough rights to do the things you need to do.
If you don't find any hints in your manuals (you should have got with your Dell Mini) how to access these rights = how to switch to an account with root rights it will be impossible to install or remove applications.

In the case that you have the rights, but they are not activated AND before you contact Dell - AND in the case if there is a default root password which is not described in the manual - you could try out:

System
  Administration
    Users and Groups

Click on the Button with the key (left of "Click to make changes")
in the next window fill in your password and [Authenticate]
Click on your account and on [Properties]
Click on /User Privileges/
make a hook to every line, you want to use (printers etc), especially "Administer the system"

If this works, the rest should work.
If not <sigh> I'm running out of ideas {except refering to Dell}

Just guessing: common (and silly) default passwords for root are
root
password

and no password at all!

Can you help with this problem?
