Addapt installer for HPE Servers by deactivating key repeat

Asked by christoInkscape

Dear Ubuntu developers,

I am using the Ubuntu server ISO CD image for HPE ProLiant Server Hardware.
It is installed without physical access to the Machine.

The computer is accessed through a virtual console launched from a Windows desktop PC.

The problem is that key-down and key-up events and not key-type events are transmitted via network.
Sometimes, due to latency of the network, the key-up arrives delayed
The installer falsely assumes that keys are hold down for a longer time.

That triggers keys-stroke repeat.
The keys are repeated. I type a single digit 1 for the IP and get 1111111111111111

This problem has been reported several times in the Web.

My suggestion: Please deactivate key repeats during the installer.

Furthermore I have the impression that even the Ubuntu server installer is bloated.
A Linux installer needs to be as small as possible and should fit on an old unused USB stick of 256 MB.
The goal is to get a minimal running system within minutes.
Funny nerd stuff like plymouth should be avoided.

I would suggest a single simple minimal TUI based installer for all.

In the post installation phase, when Network and Boot is working correctly,
the user could apt-get install a specific pseudo package to get a Linux installation of a different profile / flavour like head-less server or XFCE or even KDE desktop.

Best

Christoph

Is this over ILO? Sounds like a keybounce issue

Both, the Java applet in the ILO as well as the

Stand alone console for windows exhibit the same keybounce issue.

The problem has been around for some time and it does not seem to be fixed.

There is an ssh access to a getty at the beginning.

One sees the BIOS msgs.

But then the ILO changes into graphics mode and

the ssh access becomes useless. Maybe that using this ssh console could have been a solution if the ILO process would stay in

the text modus which it does not, unfortunately.

For me it helped to do the installation at night when the Network is less busy. I tried several times before it finally succeeded.

If keyrepeat could be deactivated easily in the ubuntu installer, this would be the most straight fwd solution in my opinion.

I am using other remote desktop solutions like Xorg, x2go and RDP and never observed any problem

due to network latency. Its a specific HPE problem. No idea why they do not use one of these existing protocolls.

Best

Christoph

Ubuntu server is 2.7 GB in size.

There is : https://mirror.pilotfiber.com/ubuntu-iso/24.04/ubuntu-24.04-netboot-amd64.tar.gz
which is 80.9 MB in size.
