My Computer Crashed

Asked by RichPicker

Last night I was installing a driver for my webcam. I restarted the computer and a Check Forced was started.
The Check Forced failed.
The message I got was this:

/dev/sda1 contains a file system with errors, check forced
apt-get is not installed, type apt-get install apt

I tried to install apt-get several times but it did nothing to fix the computer.
This morning I did a complete Feisty install - from the Edgy disk ! !

And now i am getting a similar message. I would attach the dialog box, but see no place here to add attachments.
If you reply to this message, I will send the attachment of the screen shot. It has to do with apt-get again.

This is what it says when I try to run Add/Remove Programs

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

I can NOT run Synaptic Package Manager

Rich,
If the disk check failed, you should try booting from your install CD, and then running the check from thee, with the command 'fsck /dev/sda1' from a terminal. Once that completes, we can move on to to the next steps (either fixing the filesystem or the packaging system, based on the outcome)

Sorry things haven't gone so smoothly for you...

Sorry to inconvenience you.

I updated to Feisty via the internet, and never burned
a Feisty disc. I only have an Edgy disc. That's what I
used this morning.

Just now, I downloaded Feisty from here:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download

But there is no .iso image, only a bunch of files. I
can't tell what to burn to the CD.

I've read the instructions from here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

But there is no ISO image. Just a bunch of files.

I think I understand. I'll boot from the Edgy disk, do
the fsck, then send you the results here in Feisty
from the hard disc.

Here is the result from 'fsck /dev/sda1'
-----------
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use
"sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fsck /dev/sda1
fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006)
e2fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006)
fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to
open /dev/sda1

The superblock could not be read or does not describe
a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really
contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else),
then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an
alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
---------------

I don't understand how to run the e2fsck they suggest.

Ok, you downloaded the correct file.

I don't understand you, you said there is no iso images but you downloaded ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso
This file is an iso image!

When you use file-roller, you can see the contents of the iso image, what will become the content of the cd.
But you don't need to do this.

Just follow the instructions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#head-41d485cd1f4a2902492b7e5dcc1991af2ec8f564

These are the instrucions:

"Find the downloaded ISO image in the file browser
(available at Places → Home menu on top of the
screen.) Right click on the ISO image file and choose
Write to Disc and wait for burning to complete."

But right-click on what?

I can use K3B and burn all the files to a disc. Will
that work?

I downloaded the iso again, but from a different
mirror site. All went well. I burned the CD from it.
Then booted from the CD (Feisty 7.04) and ran 'fsck
/dev/sda1'

Here is the result:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fsck /dev/sda1
fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
/dev/sda1: clean, 109160/7143424 files,
1391243/14279769 blocks
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Sorry for the confusion with the iso CD. Does this
test look good? I should try Synaptic Pkd Mgr again?

I did a fsck from the boot CD and it said 'clean'. I
tried the same with the hard drive and it said not to
do it, is too dangerous.

I can perform more test here, or do a complete
re-install with the Feisty CD, and wipe my drive
clean.

Don't know if you're interested in seeing if this is a
bug and doing more tests?

Rich,

for the error you are getting you need to:

1) Create the file /etc/apt/apt.conf file and add this line in it:

APT::Cache-Limit 10485760;

You can also use higher numbers (15728640 or 20971520 or even higher)

2) Comment out un-needed repositories: open your /etc/apt/sources.list file and add a # at the beginning of those lines for repositories that you don't need to use (usually non official or obsolete ones). Remember to open this file with sudo or gksu.

Same error.

I created the file in /etc/apt, and added the line of
text to it.

I suspect automatix maybe caused the problem. In the
/etc/apt/sources list I am not sure which repositories
to comment out, but I did comment out all of the
repositories listed after
#AUTOMATIX REPOS START

I don't know which repositories I need or don't need.
