Cannot install Dropbox - depends on libpango1.0-0

Asked by pvilela

After installing from scratch Ubuntu 24.04 beta, i tried to install Dropbox ( dropbox_2024.01.22_amd64.deb ) , which I had installed on Ubuntu 23.10. To my surprise, I could not install it. I received the following error from the Ubuntu software installer:
"pkg: problems with dependencies prevent dropbox configuration:
dropbox depends on libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.36.3); but:
The package libpango1.0-0 is not installed"

I have entered a ticket with Dropbox "Ticket #23601238: DB: Can't install Dropbox on Ubuntu 24.04", but I am not sure this is a Dropbox issue or a Ubuntu issue. In my view, Ubuntu 24.04 broke the compatibility with Dropbox

See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pango1.0/1.50.6+ds-2ubuntu1

libpango1.0-0: Layout and rendering of internationalized text (transitional package)
 ...

This is a transitional package and will be removed in a future release.
Third-party packages should depend on the individual libraries that they
use instead. If another package depends on this one, please report that
 as a bug.

Based on that information I assume that this is a fault in the dropbox *.deb package.
Dropbox should not depend on libpango1.0-0, but on libpango-1.0-0

A manual install of https://packages.ubuntu.com/mantic/libpango1.0-0 may serve as a workaround.

Status from Dropbox Support on 25 April 2024
"Hello Paulo,

Thank you for your continued patience as I've awaited confirmation from my
Engineering team. They have been able to confirm that this is a known issue
that you have identified and are in the works to have this resolved.

They do not currently have a set date for when they plan to have this
matter resolved, however, I will be checking in to confirm when the issue
is fixed!"

This issue is now fixed, with the launch of Dropbox version 2024.04.17:
dropbox_2024.04.17_amd64.deb
It can be downloaded from here: https://www.dropbox.com/install-linux

I must say the the Dropbox Support team was very helpful, and resolved this
issue very quickly

I have just used the package mentioned above.
I rebooted after the install and it appears that Dropbox works and is syncing files.
However, I cannot access the preferences panel, and so EVERYTHING is syncing, which is not what I want.

The Dropbox icon is installed and is visible in the top right of the screen, but I cannot get any dropdown to work to show the preferences.

Any idea what I should do? Or is this a bug?

I actually have exactly the same problem. The workaround which is very suboptimal is to use the CLI python script to interact with the DB service.

Suboptimal it definitely is!

I had the same problem, but it disappeared the following day, without any change on my side. After some hours, when I was going to write another bug report, I realized that I had access to the preferences.

Unfortunately I cannot just leave it. My Dropbox contains more data than the available space on the Ubuntu system. I need to use the options to deselect folders.

Clearly there is some problem with this. Does the Dropbox support team hang out here? Have they been told of this error?

In using the CLI to manipulate Dropbox I find that the commands to add a directory to the EXCLUDE list appear to complete. However, when I issue a

DROPBOX exclude list

I simply get the response,

Excluded:
Dropbox/Vault

What am I doing wrong?

@Lennie Bradshaw and @Craig:

This is not the right address for your discussion.
The purpose of this question was a problem identified by pvilela, that the dropbox package downloaded from the dropbox pages was not installable on Ubuntu 24.04. This has meanwhile been resolved and the question document has been marked as "solved".

If you want to discuss issues about the functionality of dropbox, then please do it elsewhere. That is not an Ubuntu issue.

have just opened a ticket on Dropbox support:
Ticket #23722389: DB: Can't launch Dropbox menu from icon on top bar
After installing the latest version of Dropbox (2024.04.17) on Ubuntu Linux 24.04, I was not able to launch the Dropbox menu by clicking on the Dropbox menu on the Ubuntu top bar. More people from the Ubuntu community are reporting the same problem. Strangely enough, it was not working when I installed this latest version of Dropbox, then it start to work two days later, and now it isn't working again. I couldn't understand why. Please help, as this is necessary to exclude some folders to sync from the Dropbox cloud to the local computer.
Dropbox daemon version: 198.4.7615
Dropbox command-line interface version: 2024.04.17
