Downloaded UBUNTU 9.0 desktop from Rochester. First time it worked. Now it will not make bootable DVD-R or DVD+R. CD will boot to Linux Prompt but no GUI. Tried downloading from Georgia (Mozilla) but when I try to create DVD it still defaults to Nero Essentials 7.0. Has my Nero gone corrupt after my first UBUBTU DVD burn?

Asked by WAROME

The CD burned from the downloaded file will only boot up to the Linux prompt.
The DVD(s) burned from the same downloaded file will not boot. On boot-up, the DVD led flickers and the HDD will flicker once every 10 seconds; the floppy drive led sometimes also stays on. After about ten minutes I have to press the eject cd button and then Windows XP finishes booting instead of UBIUNTU.

I tried downloading the files several times. On the last download, on the prompt window to save or open there is a pull down window for the choice of Nero or Mozilla. Both options gave me the same result (useless DVDs).

Maybe my Nero has gone bad? I was able to download the files and burn a DVD last month without any problems but after making the first DVD, I was no longer able to create a new one with that download. I tried downloading several times with no success.
Thank you,

An ISO will not corrupt your Nero settings.

If you want to burn an ISO, right click the ISO and select open with then point it to nero.exe

It will then burn. Ensure you burn as slowly as you can (8x is ok, 4x if the media will allow) and be sure to MD5 check the ISO file to ensure what you are burning is a full and correct file.

MD5Sum: 87babeda6724c3ea583534b53a9255c5

I believe the MD5 sum is right, if you create a hash of the file and websearch it you can use that to check the file too.

Hi,

I have downloaded ubuntu 9.04 through bit torrent. It is quite reliable .However
it took 5 to 6 hours to get in to your system. I could install it on my system without any problem.

you can download ubuntu on any existing windows system by using bittorrent (www.bittorrent.com)
Then go to www.torrent-finder.com to find ubuntu 9.04 and download the torrent file.

 I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Swami.

My system is running Win XP Pro SP3; AMD Duron 1.2 GHZ, 1.G RAM.I found the first DVD I burned of UBUNTU. It does not lock up on boot-up. The system starts to boot from the DVD drive, screen goes blank and then XP takes over. All recent downloads from UBUNTU.com/getubuntu Download Now, Desktop give the worst result: DVD that do not complete the boot or a CD that brings me to the Linuz $ prompt.  Since I am new to Linux, I do not know what to do after the $ prompt.I just went to bittorrent and did the download (top line from the search).  It completed as expected.  I burned a DVD (nero essentials 7) and the DVD acted as my original disk above.  It starts to boot and suddendly Windows XP takes over. The DVD that do not work for me at home, act the same way in my computer at work.Thank you for your time and help.  Any other suggestions?  I also had a reply from another person in the forum.  I will try to see if I can understand his comments and try that too.Can you post my response to you as open issue?----- Original Message -----From: Swaminathan Date: Monday, August 3, 2009 7:24 pmSubject: Re: [Question #79047]: Downloaded UBUNTU 9.0 desktop from Rochester. Hi

I think it might be a good idea to try ordering a free Ubuntu cd (or a few for people you know) from shipit
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
Shipit are great but it can take 2 months to get the Cd delivered that way.

In the meantime this guide might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
i tend to find the cheapest "write once" cds that you can only get in blocks of 10 or more are better for this than more expensive cds. Dvds tend to be really rubbish, well at this they seem to be anyway - i've not had much luck even at slowest burn speeds for this type of thing.

Also it might be worth trying a very much lighter version of linux
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slitaz
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
either of these should produce a much better cd. SliTaz is very tiny but Wolvix Hunter 1.1.0 has better hardware detection and hardware support so try either of them.

Anyway once you have the cd then boot up from it to the menu with "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine", if you don't get that menu then this guide might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
Choosing the "Try Ubuntu ... " option should get you to a working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session", if it works ;)

For Wolvix & sliTaz you just get a splash-screen, no menu, but just pressing enter should get you to a working desktop "LiveCd session" just the same. Oh, the wolvix username is "root" and the password is "toor" btw.

Hopefully something here works!
Good luck with all this!
Regards from
Tom :)
