ubuntu is not easy to install as well as my experience to install ubuntu
this will reported for you to help you careful things up
1. you need download or shipit, make 1 hour to download 8.04 or 9.04 from server on my country
2. you need to recheck iso / md5 before to burn it to cd/dvd
3. to ensure you may select check cd defect to reensure reported no error found
4. read your disk, check what kind partition there, you need more knowledge about linux partition
5. It may locked your system alert about grub or sometime your monitor just black and you will push hard down power button

umenu.exe more easy to click inside windows

It's not too difficult. Have a look at "BurningIsoHowto" on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

As Arochester said. Hopefully there's a guide to how to check the md5sum. I tend to find the cheapest "write once" cd's that you can only buy in blocks of 10 or more are better than more expensive types.

then try booting up the machine with the Cd in the cd/dvd-drive. This should get you to a menu with "Try Ubutnu without changes to this machine" as the top option, otherwise this guide should help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
Choosing the "Try Ubuntu ..." option should get you to a working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session" if it works. Hopefully the firefox on the top taskbar should help yu navigate through to here again ;)

If it looks ok then perhaps install this way
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
to make a strong dual-boot that works well with Windows without having to rely on it.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
