Thank you for you question.

Can you give us more information about your machine ? ( Memory, Processor, Harddisk ) We need this information to help you

Why do you want use ubuntu 4.10 ? You can use the new version maybe with Xubuntu. Ubuntu is not like Windows is configurable you dont need use a old version.

macuto, The only disk I have to boot up ubunta is this live cd which happens to be 4.10. Right now I only have 18 days left on xp and need to change. my memory is 256.00 mb and the processor is x86 family 6 model 5 stepping 2 genuineIntel. as far as harddisk I really don't know what you mean you can maybe put it in different term?

Ubuntu Lite needs even less resources than Xubuntu.

It uses IceWm and you can run it on a Pentium @ 200 MHz with 64 MB of RAM.

Raul you are right but is not a official distribution. I fact are more alternatives like Flubuntu or do a minimal install and configure to the use it with your needs but I think this need more experience to be done.
