USB mouse stops worknig after about 2 mins in Ubuntu 7.04

Asked by Ammo

After I boot into Ubuntu 7.04 with the live CD, everything works fine for about 2 mins, when the mouse just stops responding. I cannot click or move the mouse and the optical light turns off. I'm pretty sure I had the same problem with the same computer with Ubuntu 6.06. Help is appreciated because I need to get linux working for school

PC Specs:
Asus P5NSLI mobo
Microsoft Wired USB Optical Mouse
Dual Booting with Vista(attempting to atleast)

What happens if you unplug and plug the mouse again?

May I ask for what exactly you 'need to get linux working for school'?
Is it for a linux lesson / course or just for doing ordinary school-homework.

Unplugging/plugging back in doesn't help.

We do a lot of work with Unix.
And I'm taking a class on Linux next semester.

Might be an udev problem I would say.

If you will have a class on linux it will be a better idea to install linux
and not run a live cd.

Well, I'm trying to install it, but I can't because my mouse stops working.

If you want to install, why not trying the alternate CD (no mouse is needed for installation)?
If you still have the mouse problem after the installation we can try to debug it (we can't with the Live CD).

I'm experiencing the same issue in Gutsy, I have the same mother board and a Microsoft Wired USB Optical Mouse , I am succesfully booting vista at the moment but I don't believe that to be related. Although plugging the mouse out and in does not correct the problem as he states, booting with a second USB mouse simultaneously does (in my case, a logitech) .

i am having the same problem. i have a set of microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse. it works perfectly fine for the first couple mins, and suddenly the mouse stops working. there seems not to be an obvious trigger for this. and unplug-then-plug-back again wont solve the problem unless reboot.

i notice this problem is not just for ubuntu, it happens to other linux distro as well, it happen to me when i run sysrescure cd as well: http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
so is this some kind of kernel problem?

Actually I found out that it was a bios problem in my situation updating my
motherboard to the latest firmware corrected the issue, and seemed to
improve my over all performace (you may want to attempt the same)

well...i had this problem with "...usb mouse that stops working after 2-5 minutes..." since i first installed edgy eft. Hoped that in feisty it'll pass, but it didn't...and now i hear that not even in gutsy has this problem been fixed :| .

I searched the web high and low...and found the answer (at least for me). It's actually quite simple: you have to add some boot options to the kernel: "noapic irqpoll" somewhere between "quiet" and "splash". You can do this every time you boot: get to the grub loader, then select your kernel, press "e", then go to the kernel line, press "e" again, then add those 2 options, then press enter, and in the end press "b" to boot that kernel with those 2 extra options ;) (hope i got these right :D ) !!!!Atention - this process must be done everytime you reboot. Another method is to edit the "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file, and add the "noapic" and "irqpoll" options in the place where your kernel/s is/are mentioned (as i recall they are somewhere at the end). Add the options between "ro" and "quiet", or between "quiet" and "splash" (i didn't see any difference).
BUT! there is an issue...I used this method for some time now, and noticed that the computer is terribly slow. I mean..i have 1.5 GB RAM, an Intel Celeron M at 1.6 Ghz, and I must wait for about 10-15 seconds for Firefox to open + I use Eclipse (Java IDE) a lot...and noticed a huuuuge difference between Eclipse's perfomance in Ubuntu and in Windows, Debian, SuSe, Fedora etc. It's awfully slow (compared to how it should be). The windows minimize/maximize slowly, Nautilus, XMMS, Gimp, Gaim, Open Office, Totem Movie Player and all the other applications work like the computer is a PIII at 755 Mhz with 256 Mb Ram :| .

So....if anyone has another solution to this "...usb mouse that stops working after 2-5 minutes...", please keep us posted ;)

Cheers!

Radu

@Ramiro Jr. Franco - I also updated the BIOS, and this didn't solve the problem. The mouse works great in Ubuntu 6.06, and also in FC 5,6, SuSe 9.3, Debian, Windows and so on.

I have a P5N-E and had the same thing happen with 7.04.
In the BIOS under Advanced CPU Configuration after I set "Enhanced Intel SpeedStep" to DISABLED - everything worked fine.

I thought I had posted that I found a resolution to the matter, it simply
required me to upgrade my motherboard's bios so I'm assuming it was a
problem on my manufacturer's end and not in ubuntu, mouse is currently
working fine!
Thanks a lot for checking though, I appreciate it!

I have not since updating my bios been able to reproduce this error, this
does not mean however that reverting my bios to a previous version, wouldn't
cause the error to return, but I won't have the time for that kind of
testing soon.

I am running 8.10. After my Laptop goes to the screen blanker, the External USB Mouse becomes very slow while the Laptop TouchPad works fine. FYI, I have an xternal keyboard plugged into a USB connected Docking station that the keyboard get's a bit wierd too. Like skipping keys if you type to quickly or occasionally acting like you are holding the key down so that it starts repeating a characterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr until I hit another key. The keypad on the Laptop works fine. The external keyboard and mouse are both connected throug the Vantec Docking Station, my Laptop doesn't have enough USB Ports.

Lastly, I have a Logitech Webcam (3000?) that is not connected via Docking station but it connected directlyto a USB port on the Laptop. Thatseems to ork correctly until the screen blanker comes on and then it doesn't seem to work (at least in Skype) afterwards. I will try to a) play around in the Bios with USB settings(legacy...) and b) try turning off screen blanker or at least playing with it.

Iiif youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu arecurious about missingletters and blanks etc. I am typing this in on he external keyboarddddddddddddddddddd. Ileft all of the errors in for this paragraph.

Well, it wasn't the legacy USB setting in the BIOS. It seems to be related to the Screen Saver software. I turned that off and left my computer overnight and the USB Keyboard/Mouse still seem to be working normally. I'll turn it back on and see what happens.

Huh, now I can't make my computer fritz out after turning back on the Screen saver. I'm pretty sure it was related to the Screen saver, but currently can't prove it. I'll play with it and see if I can duplicate.

@jervin - This thread is not keyboard related, it regards a problem with the mouse stopping to work after some time from startup. There must be a thread concerning your problem with the keyboard.

I was, at the time, having a problem that affected both my mouse and my keyboard. The mouse description matched some of the descriptions above. I was coming to the conclusion that it was more of a USB problem than a mouse problem because it seemed to affect all USB attached devices simultaneously. Sorry I was not clear enough. -jfe-

Can you help with this problem?
