BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 02) not working on Dell Latitude X300 in Ubuntu 9.04 - conflict between b43legacy-phy0 driver and manually installed ndiswrapper driver

Asked by Ludovic

Hi all,

I'm a Linux newbie and have installed Ubuntu 9.4 (Jauty Jackalope, where do they find those names?) and find it much better than what people said... except for the Wifi driver of my old Dell Latitude X300 with a Broadcom BCM4306 (v2) mini-PCI card.

I've followed the steps in this post
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/67953
and tried to install the drivers using the bcm43xx-fwcutter as depicted on the blog linked from this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsBroadcom#miniPCI
and
http://davidwatson.org/2007/05/broadcom-4306-on-feisty-fawn.html

What seems to happen is that the PCI Wireless adapter is not enabled (yes, I've tried Fn+F2), as the command 'sudo lshw -C network shows:
- my Broadcomm adapter is found as 'network:0' under the logical name 'wlan0'
- when I enter the command 'lshw -C network', it says '*-network:0 DISABLED'
- when I insert a PCMCIA WiFi card (unfortunately it's one of the very first ones and doesn't seem to support WEP encryption), I can "see" the WiFi networks in the neighbourhood but when it's not present the 'Wireless Networks' option in the networking tray icon is greyed out.

That's why the only think I can work out as a cause is that there's a software switch for wireless that's off, because Ubuntu recognises the card but can't use it.

Thought anyone?

Hi Ludovic,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below into a Terminal, press enter, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting back, here's the results from this command. Note that I was connected to a WiFi at the time, via the PCMCIA IBM Wireless 802.1b adapter -plus the Ethernet cable as instructed.
Happy to unplug the IBM card if required, but the output does look the same to me -but I'm a Linux Newbie :-)

Cheers,

Ludovic.

Hi,

Please connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

Please disconnect your PCMCIA IBM Wireless 802.1b adapter, as we only want to test your BCM4306 wireless card and we want to keep the wireless setup as simple as possible.

Then please follow this Broadcom driver installation procedure :

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

Step 3: Run the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

# Add the following line at the end of the blacklist.conf file and save the change:

blacklist ndiswrapper

Step 4: Reboot your pc and then retest wireless.

Step 5: If the BCM4306 wireless chipset still does not work after rebooting, please send us the output again of the following command:

The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below into a Terminal, press enter, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I've tried the above but to no avail.

Here are the results of the Step 5 as above.

~$ sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
