java versions issue + java lag in ubuntu

Asked by ranjith

Hi,

I have recently installed ubuntu in place of vista and i must say that the entire process went without a glitch. I have two issues pertaining to java and ubuntu as follows (cropped as i am an addict of funkysnooker.com)

1. I first installed java 5, but firefox didnt recognize. Then i installed java 6, thinking it would update automatically. Now the issue is that when i type "java -version" in terminal it shows version 5, and the firefox browser (through java site) conveys java 6. How do i uninstall one version and which should i ?

2. funkysnooker.com is an online java game, and used to run perfectly on vista. But in ubuntu, there is a big lag in the graphics which makes it impossible to play the game. The cursor movement lags is lagging in bits.

Can someone guide me in solving this issue ?

Regards
Ranjith

Funny game!

Open synaptics... then search for "jre" and mark the 5-version for uninstall.

Hi flash,

Funny but quite addictive it is ! I did what you said, and find below the result

donny@donny-laptop:~$ java -version
The program 'java' can be found in the following packages:
 * gij-4.3
 * java-gcj-compat-headless
 * openjdk-6-jre-headless
 * cacao
 * gij-4.2
 * jamvm
 * kaffe
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
bash: java: command not found

Is this normal ? The browser does open the game but my issue no 2 still remains unsolved !

Might be you want to install sun-java6

How to install Java

To install sun-java6

Please first enable the multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

and then select this as your default java jre with

sudo update-java-alternatives

Hope this helps

Hi

I installed java 6 but it didnt solve my issue. The following is the result now.

donny@donny-laptop:~$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_13"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 11.3-b02, mixed mode)
donny@donny-laptop:~$

I have tried different browsers including opera and epiphany, but the java applet of www.funkysnooker.com is very very slow. There is a clear lag. Not only this website, but all other java applets are also very slow.

I use a HP laptop with AMD Turion, 3GB RAM, NVIDIA graphics card and Ubuntu 9.10

I have also tried googling for an answer but didnt find any !!

Pls help !
