Ubuntu server VPN set up and admin access

Asked by marion

Hi Community! I am fairly new to Linux and such is the nature of my query. First of all, I've been using Windows server 2003 Standard edition until now however I have been advised to change to Linux and before I do so I need to get some answers first.

OK, so on my Linux dedicated server I need to run the following set up: multiple users (using VPN) need to be able to connect simultaneously through the server to the Internet. (I am running same set up on Windows server now). Is this possible with Server OS Ubuntu 8.10?

Also,as an admin I can access my Windows server through Remote Desktop Connection on my computer. How do I access the Linux server? Is there a similar way to do so? If yes, what is it called?

Thanx a lot guys. I appreciate your help a lot.

Do you want the Ubuntu system to act as a VPN endpoint for the clients to connect to, or just to allow clients o connect through the system to some VPN endpoint (system acting like a router)? You can run VPN endpoint software on Ubuntu and allow users to connect with userame and password or even security key files.

You don't really need much to access the server, you can use SSH and interface that way. It is very uncommon for a server to run a gui (for security as well as reduce resources used) so SSH and web interfaces are extremely common. This is why the server edition of Ubuntu does not come with an X server and simply boots to a command line interface.

Hi. First of all thank u for your reply. As I said I am very new to Linux.

Yes, I need the users to connect with user name and password to the server, which then assign an IP address to each user from a pool of IPs that I purchased. Users connect through the server to the Internet.

When u say: ''You can run VPN endpoint software'' does it mean I need to install an additional software on top of the Ubuntu 8.10 that comes with the dedicated server?

You seem to be a specialist for the matter. I would like to ask you to do the set up on my server if possible. I can pay you for the work done.

Pls let me know as ideally I need to have it set up on Wednesday.

Marion

You simply need t ofollow the guides. The stock server does not have a VPN server installed or enabled but can be installed from the repo then configured. Just read guides onlie (The ones I chose are the community ones but other guides may suit you)

Setting up the system will also teach you a lot about networking as well as the OS itself.

Can you help with this problem?
