No puedo cambiar los efectos visuales
Hola! estoy tratando de colocar los efectos visuales en mi PC pero obtengo un mensaje de error que dice "desktop visual effects can not be enable". Mi tarjeta gráfica es una Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV. Que puedo hacer para arreglarlo? gracias por la ayuda que me puedan brindar

Aunque no tengo tu tarjeta de video, mirando por Internet parece que Ubuntu tiene tu tarjeta en una lista negra para correr compiz. Y eso que funciona con el driver libre de Intel.
Si de todas formas quieres probar (bajo tu responsabilidad de lo que pueda pasar), ejecuta lo siguiente:
$ sudo gedit /usr/bin/compiz
Y comenta la línea correspondiente a tu tarjeta Intel 845, poniendo un # delante. Guarda los cambios y reinicia.

Gracias, Samuel por tu respuesta, pero ahora me surge otra inquietud... que
riesgo hay de hacer lo que sugieres? podría dañar el equipo o solo hacer que
este no funcione y me toque reinstalar todo nuevamente? que sugieres que
haga? un abrazo!

No es ningún peligro importante. Como mucho no podrás acceder de forma gráfica a tu sistema o se quedaría bloqueado el interfaz gráfico, pero podrías entrar por consola en el mismo equipo (Ctrl+Alt+F2 por ejemplo y vuelves al entorno gráfico con Ctrl+Alt+F7), o con el LiveCD para montar tu disco duro y hacerlo desde alli. Con uno de estos métodos, sólo tienes que quitar el # que pusiste en el fichero y reiniciar.
Resumiendo, que no le pasará nada a tu sistema ni tendrás que reinstalar, sólamente tendrás que acceder por consola para deshacer el cambio hecho en el caso de que no te funcione bien.

Gracias Julián, acabo de instalar las actualizaciones e intente cambiar los
efectos visuales nuevamente, pero aun no trabaja. La verdad no se como
funciona lo de las actualizaciones... estas las tengo que bajar yo de algún
sitio especial o son las mismas que llegan diariamente? Gracias nuevamente
por cualquier luz que me des al respecto, hasta pronto.

Son las mismas que llega directamente...
Bueno, en ese caso, por favor envía la salida del comando lspci en una
terminal (Aplicaciones -> Accesorios -> Terminal). Escribes: lspci y
luego presionas enter.

Prueba abriendo una Terminal (Aplicaciones -> Accesorios -> Terminal)
y escribe en una sola linea esto:
SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz
Cuentanos si sirve.. De todas maneras, ya se porque existe este error.
En Ubuntu esta deshabilitado compiz (efectos gráficos) porque algunas
veces se han presentado problemas con la reproducción de algunos
videos y con el inicio del sistema. Por eso por seguridad está
«vetada» esta tarjeta de video.

Hola Julian, hice la prueba con el SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz, pero tan pronto
lo escribo en el terminal comienza a hacer algun proceso y se bloquea
inmediatamente, me toca apagarlo con el interruptor y volverlo a encender.[?]ya
perdi la esperanza... parece que nada va hacer que funcionen los efectos
visuales
. En todo caso agradesco tu tiempo y esfuerzo, un abrazo!!! Hasta la proxima

Tienes instalados los paquetes de compiz y compiz setting manager?
De no ser así, debes entrar a synaptics y descargar los siguientes paquetes:
compizconfig-
emerald
