Installed Ubuntu 9.04 without error - No display

Asked by TonyR

I had major problems installing Ubuntu or Xubuntu on my Compaq Presario 1200 P3 192 MB RAM laptop which kept trashing the CD drive like it unable to read the disk image on perfectly good disks. I had used the check disk option and all reports to be fine. The CD drive in the laptop in Windows functions fine. The disks install fine on other machines. If I choose F4 Safe Mode install I got a little further – prompted for language gets to the herring splash screen after about 15 minutes and starts with a cross that after 5 minutes turns to a pointer but from here it stalls with the CD drive making a hell of a racket.

I got no error message but never get to start a setup process. I have tried 20 times with many disks but nothing worked. On advice from a friend I downloaded the Ubuntu 9.04 alternative distribution with simplified garphics which loaded without error but took about 55 minutes. No trashing of the CR Drive so all looked OK. However when I started for the 1st time I got the normal Ubuntu spash screen while loading and the start up drum audio and then a completely blank screen. With the blank screen i tried typing my users name and password and again it seem to log me in from the HD activity and provides the appropriate audio but completely blank screen.

How can I run a setup program completely without error and end up with a blank screen - I mean not even a poor quality VGA 640 X 480 crap display? Absolutely nothing? I am completely stuned by this outcome. Never seen anything like it in 25 years.

I tried starting in safe mode and i can see the output to the display while starting up with NO errors. At the end i get the blank display.

It does not like the display adapter in the compaq but how do I resolve? Why no notice of this incompatability during setup? Who wrote the setup program to have it fail so completely?

Any suggestions would be mosty appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue after upgrading last night. I am interested in how to solve this issue as well. I have my PC as dual boot. I see GRUB just fine. When i go into windows, it says ubuntu on and the progress bar updates like normal. Then once it gets passed that screen all i see is a blank black screen. My monitor throws up up box that says "Auto config please wait" but once that disappears in 3 seconds or so... i still see nothing.

Hi

I can add more information. I tried to connect my laptop to my LDC TV and Voila I suddenly could see the Ubuntu interface on both the laptop and the LCD TV. When I disconnected the VGA cable from the back I continued to see the display as normal on the laptop. It was all working well however if I restart the laptop without the VGA cable attached I get the blank screen treatment. I noticed when connected to the remote display that I was not able to switch the displays beterrn laptop display and remote display properly further suggesting that Ubuntu does not recognise the display properly.

So it appears the system in the laptop that switches from local screen to remote screen as used in presentations is not recognised properly with ubuntu 9.04. How do I resolve when I canoot find any reports of this issue? I can't be the 1st user to have hit this bug.

Marcobra - with respect I think that Jessica's issue is sufficiently similar to have a response without having to log a new support issue within this thread.

Kind Regards

Tony,

I'm not sure if this can help you or if it's the correct way of doing things but this is how i fixed it for me today.

I choose to go into recovery mode and went to the sudo terminal session w/ networking

I then typed in "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst"

I then looked for where in grub and looked for where my ubuntu install is and at the end of that line there was "splash"
I removed splash and then CRTL + W to save and CRTL +X to exit nano.

I then typed into the terminal session
        sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I looked for the section "Device"
and right before the end section of device I added
                  Driver "vesa"
(i did not have Driver in that device section, so i don't know if it should of been there originally.)

I then CTRL + W to save and CTRL +X to exit. Then i typed "Exit" in the session terminal to get back to the list of choice under the recovery mode. I then choose to boot normally.

My screen now works. I found this searching the internet, but i can not remember the site to give credit to whom ever deserves it.

I'm not sure if this would help you, but hopefully it does. You may back up the files before trying this, if you try it.

If this doesn't help, i hope someone can help you with your specific issue.

Regards
Jessica

Hi Jessica

Thank you for your suggestions. The menu.lst changes i was able to apply.

When I try to open the xorg.conf via nano via the terminal I get a blank file so i have nothing to edit. Same eith gedit.

If I boot up vai an external XGA connection where I can see the GUI and I browse to etc folder I can see a xorg.conf file with contents. Using Gedit in the GUI I can edit as you recommend however I canot save as I have insufficient permission.

I am hosed.

I hate this dame sudo command line interface which is completely destroying linux by disabling users who want to use and learn.

Why cant I edit via the GUI if I have Admin rights and password without going to a stoneage terminal?

I canot seee any content in this file when I use the terminal as it opens as if it were a new file created. Why wont it open the existing file so I can edit?

I am so frustrated by this software which will not even give me a display.

Please help.

Tony,

Yeah you can't go through it via the UI since you have to be sudo to save it. (or at least i don't know how to do it via the UI)

When doing it command line via the terminal, i can can figure is you must of mispelled it for it to be blank. I know i had it blank a couple times because i wasn't using the ".conf" extension, i kept typing 'config" for some reason.
Make sure the X is capital in (X eleven),

The command i use to get to it was this:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

And that section in the file i had looking like this:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Driver "vesa"
EndSection

If you still have issues getting to the file try
cd /etc
cd /X11
sudo ls (you should be able to see the file in the list after doing ls)
then do
sudo nano xorg.conf

Hope that helps

Hi Jessica

Thanks again for your further advice.

Alas, when I type character what you have suggested I get a balnk file. I am certain I have put the DOT in.

I repeated the test on another UBUNTU computer with a earlier release and again I got a blank file.

Truthfully I have tried more than 50 times to enter these few characters completely dumbfounded that I cannot even edit a text file that I can read so easily in the GUI.

I guess this sums up what has destroyed Linux and prevented it getting wider main stream use. They need to provide a GUI and dump the terminal which is completely obsolete.

I cannot even try to test your suggestion for reasons I cannot explain.

I guess I will have to stick to Windows which I am a power user however I would like to be able to use Open Source but it is simple not possible. How can ordinary non technical people ever be expected to adapt Linux when such impediments are placed to edited configuration files?

Many Thanks for your advice.

Hi

I got round the problem of seeing a blank xorg.conf

By typing sudo gedit and providing the PASSWORD I get into GEDIT

From gedit I could do a File Open and browse to the xorg.conf and make the changes Jessica kindly provided. I would be most grateful if some Unix geek could explain why when I run the sudo command with the full path I get to open a blank file. I would like to learn.

When I finally added the driver "vesa" I did get a change in the situation.

Now when I start the laptop I get a GUI except about 60% of the 13.2 inch screen so I have a 320 mm black border all around the sceen making the workspace 200 mm by 150mm.

When I select "configure display settings" I get a very sparten interface telling me the Monitor is unknown and I have a resolution of 800 X 600. I have no way to increase the sesolution or screen size.

How can UBUNTU leave me in this state and how come no one can offer a solution?

I am of the impression that a display is a basic input interface and yet I have such poor support for a Comaq laptop. I would expect to be able to load almost any OS and be able to get a full screen display that fills the available screen space. i have never seen anything like this before.

If I conect anything to the external VGA port I get a Full display on both the laptop screen and the external display.

What is causing this problem that Ubuntu does not provide relaible SVGA support?

Can I get the Vesa driver to give me 1024 x 768?

I have tried some variables in the xorg.conf to try to tell Ubuntu that my laptop has the capability to display at 1024x768 however despite several hours I cannot seem to work out what to put in the file. The video has 8MB enabled in the BIOS. I get a goo quality display as a box filling only 70% of the screen size. Ubuntu's "configure display settings" gives me no option to increase the resolution to adjust display showing only 800x600 at 61Hz or 640x480

This is what I have currently in the xorg.conf:

Many Thanks

Hi

The problem was resolved with a modification to the xorg.conf file setting explicit Vsync and Hsync value ranges.

i estimated these values from review of other people's xorg.cong files with similar equipment. It is very difficult for users to know what they should be entering in these type of files if they do not know exact details about the monitor in ther laptop or the display adapter capibilities. Many Laptop manuals simply do not provide this detail.

I am most grateful for those who assisted.
