Screen Size. Cannot see all buttons in thunderbird lightning

Asked by New2Ubuntu

i'm running jaunty 9.04 desktop on a samsung nc10 (10.2" display). i have problems in seeing all available buttons when using some apps e.g. thunderbird, lightning. this is especially a problem when inviting attendees using the diary function. normally i cannot see the save or the OK buttons when I've made changes to something. some workarounds are OK such as back tabbing and hitting return but it does not work all of the time. i've tried re-sizing, dragging but to no avail. i've also tried system preferences display. interestingly this thinks it's an 11" screen that I have which maybe causing the problem but again I cannot change it to 10.2". it asks me to drag the monitors to set their place. this does not seem to do anything? does anyone know how I can get the right display set up so i dont have this problem. thanks

Hi,

I've experienced similar problems back in the ages ago when I ran KDE at a resolution of 640x480. Just so you're aware, it's actually the screen resolution (i.e. 1024 by 600 pixels) you're using, not the physical screen dimensions (i.e. "10.2 inches") that's cutting off the display of some of your buttons (assuming the gnome display you see isn't cut off -- if you see the gnome menu bars at top and bottom of screen everything is fine).

According to this page I found on the NC10:
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/samsung-nc10.aspx
the native screen resolution of your display should be 1024 by 600. I'd recommend double-checking to make sure you're actually running at this resolution (go to System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution , and make sure your screen is set to 1024 x 600 ).

Now, as for workarounds, assuming your screen resolution is the best you can get:

* Are you sure you can't get thunderbird to show you the buttons you need? When I click the compose button in thunderbird, I'm presented with a Compose window which I can resize easily. The main Thunderbird window also can be resized to use very little vertical screen real estate. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't fit your thunderbird windows into the 600 vertical pixels you have. If thunderbird really can't fit, can you attach a screenshot showing thunderbird on yoru desktop?

* This workaround only applies to the KDE window manager, which you'd have to install and start using separately from gnome, but one poster on this page mentions a "window panning" feature available in KDE which is helpful for very low resolution monitors:
  http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/slackware-linux-help/41095-kde-resolution-problem.html
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any similar window panning available for gnome.

Hope this info helps
Josh

hi josh,

thanks for the response. how do i attach screenshots using launchpad. i'm definately running 1024*600 resolution. in terms of resizing the app lets me do that but it only resizes what I see on screen. it does not bring the buttons that I cant see into the screen that I have resized

i see the gnome menu bars and in most apps the display is fine. it just seems that thunderbird, lightning has the problem

i've got a couple of screenshots ready to go but dont think i can attach using this forum?

New2Ubuntu,

I actually can't find how to attach pictures on launchpad either.

I took a look at the "lightning" calendar app for thunderbird; I assumed you were talking about two separate applications previously. Anyway, you might be entirely correct about the interface for lightning; I couldn't get the basic calendar features to work at all on my install of thunderbird, and didn't feel like beating it into submission, but the interface looks clunky enough that you might not be able to resize your window appropriately.

Maybe someone else here who can actually get lightning to work can help, or has general advice on running gnome with a low vertical resolution like you're doing.
