Need a screen capture pkg which can print a selected area of window.

Asked by Robshaus

My daily work requires that I have on paper, or copy to a spreadsheet the data presented on a portion of a web page. I do this now with screen capture software in Win XP. Would like to
accomplish this task on my Ubuntu 7 workstation. Robert

Aldo, camtasia is a windows application and is therefore not appropriate to an Ubuntu workstation installation.

You have a few options.

* ALT+Printscreen will grab exactly one window.
* Open gimp and choose File --> Acquire --> Screenshot
* Applications --> Accessories --> Take screenshot (which you could right click and add to the panel so you can easily click it to take a picture).

You can then open any of the above images in GIMP, draw a rectangle around the area you want, choose copy and then paste it into your document.

There are numerous other ways to take screen grabs on linux, a few are listed here:-

Here is a comprehensive one:-

Alan, Please accept my apologies for being so late with my reply. Your
advise has lead me : Gnome/Applications/Accessories/take a screen shot/
whole page/Save file to desktop. Then: Applications/graphics/Gimp/ open
file/ crop/Print. In all a lengthy process compared to the other procedure.

I reply rather than feedback because I Have another question.: Gimp/help
responds with "The Gimp files were not installed.Make sure Gimp-help-en is
installed." I cannot find a source for this package either on the Ubuntu 7.?
CD, from the package list, or on the Gimp website.
Your advise is welcome. Robert

Ksnapshot can do this. Ksnapshot is part of the of Kubuntu, but is only to a minimum of kde packages depended so maybe it makes also sense on ubuntu to install this. If you use region as capture mode, you can select any part on you screen.

Thank you. To implement Knapshot I have installed Kubuntu.

ksnapshot is a great utility. For future searchers, the following command will install ksnapshot and handle the desktop environment requirements without explicitly installing kubuntu first:

   sudo apt-get install ksnapshot

After a lot of looking around, I think I have found the only free screenshot utiliy that allows you to draw a selection rectangle on the screen and capture only what you want and save it as a jpg. The link leading up to it only mentions the Mac, but when you go to the download page, there is an English and a Spanish version for Linux. I got it working by expanding the file right on the desktop, which gives you an icon named Captura. Double click the icon, select a rectangle on the screen, and press Save. It saves the screenshot to your home folder. For several screenshots, rename the file (capture 1, 2 etc) on the bottom before pressing Save. Works well.

Get here:

Ksnapshot used to have an Icon for direct PRINT. Why has it gone missing?
