I need a maildir email client on GNOME: which one?

Asked by Uqbar

I have a number of different email addresses for different purposes.
A couple of them uses 2+GB with 17+K messages.
For a number of reasons I don't want to split them into (sub)folders.
At the moment I use Evolution which is becoming way too slow when accessing those huge mailboxes. Evolution uses a "single file with index" implementation for the local email storage.
I've tried some tricks (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+question/56412) but while they solve the problem on one hand, they expose some strange behaviours in the other.
Is there any comparable email client (MUA) that uses maildir format natively?

If you are using the Gnome or KDE desktop, I would suggest you install Kmail. It is a good program which I have been using for several years without problems, and it uses a Maildir configuration. You can also specify a ton of different mailaddresses. I have currently four. Mails to the different addresses can be directed to separate directories to separate them from each other. You can also filter out spams and things. A great program!

I also used KMail for years until I switched to GNOME from KDE4.
And I admit, I'm missing KMail a lot.
But pulling KMail into GNOME will also pull a pletora of other packages.
You end up with an almost complete KDE installation.

Sorry, but that is the only suggestion I have. I can't remember how many packages I had to install, but I, for one, can live with that.

By the way, to pull Kontact (the whole PIM application) into GNOME you need to install 48 more KDE-related packages!
