How can I store my emails in Maildir format in Evolution?

Thanks Anand Kumria, that solved my question.

I have found a workaround: I have created two accounts:
- one for pop download
- one for maildir folder

That is all the emails are download (via pop server) in the inbox folder of the pop account, then I save them into the maildir folders of the other account. So my emails are all stored in maildir format.

Using a separate program (daemon) to fetch the email would "solve" the problem only for received messages not for the sent ones.
Moreover, the daemon would be (normally without tricks) running even when the actual client is not running.
And I doubt that Marco's solution is working the problem around, as Evolution can only read from maildirs, not write.

Any other idea?

Evolution stores its mail data in $HOME/.evolution (except account information and passwords). So if you like to change the location for example to a removable USB memory stick, the best way would be to setup a new account type, e.g. a maildir, and point it to the USB location. You can then use filters to make all POP mails go there, and the Sent and Drafts folders can be overwritten to also point there. The only thing which cannot move is the Outbox.

Which is basically Marco's suggestion (kudos on him!) with some more details.

By the way, this "trick" works very well for me (2+GB data, 15+K messages in each folder) with XFS file system.
Results can vary also because of the underlying file system choice.

Sometimes the newly arrived messages are not shown.
In that case I need to close the application and restart it.

I'd like to know how it works at better. For the use I can do, and the similar one by others. I tried to find all data available, and are very few. Most relevant I found an answer in Gnome project where is discouraged the use of symlink instead of maildir for usb-pendrives, and a wikipedia definition of maildir (yet unconfirmed, but reliable)
1) the specifications of maildir don't allow multiple folders and subfolders, only 3 fixed dirs (as in some cameras or mp3players), eventually one cannot move a complex folders>subfolders ensemble of his choise on the pendrive;
2) this would not matter if through Evolution filters one can read them organized as his will; but how does this work?I think that all just set rules must be replyed for messages incoming from maidir, analogous to the one for the real server, is this true?and if it's, the former filters must be cancelled?
3) remain little defined the way to manage draft and sent mail (and how to regulate forwarding mails into mailldir account;
would someone clear my doubts?

I founf my own best way: switch back to KMail.
I have native maildir support and 3+ GB of emails managed without a glitch.

I too think kmail is a better email client (expecially for powered users) but Evolution could be simpler to use. I normally use Evolution (after having used kmail for years) with maildir (as you can read in my previous posts) and I have no problems. The only issue is that you have to define two accounts (pop and maildir).

Di seguito il mio modo di personalizzare il sistema, la questione essenziale è tra le righe a doppio tratto in fondo.

Io uso netbook remix 9.04,
nonostante molte piccole pecche e qualche bug, alcuni ancora da risolvere, mi è sembrato la migliore scelta per un eee900, ho aggiunto Database, completando OOO anche con altri dizionari, Audacity, Scribus, Inkscape & Skype. Per caricare Kmail dovrei istallare anche un sacco di acessori di KDE, ha il Celeron non l'Atom, i programmi sono abbastanza veloci, mentre il desktop remix fatica un pò (l'avrei sostituito con lo Gnome normale, ma in Live la modifica era irreversibile). Va più sciolto da quando ho tolto qualche dir e qualche icona poco utile (giochi,e alcune che oltretutto funzionano solo da linea di comando, non le ho cancellate del tutto solo per ricordarmi i pogrammi relativi se servirà) toglierei qualcosa anche dal pannello di destra (dove compare inutilmente un disco Bios;li ho lasciati per la velocizzazione del boot e per eventuali aggionamenti). Più del necessario non vorrei appesantirlo, toglierei anche Gimp che uso solo per trasformare colore in b/n. Mi pare che ci sia anche un programma che trasforma automaticamente i sorgenti, perche Canonical aggiorna anche con quelli in predefinito, ma non so qual'è. Scusate tutto questo off-topics, ma serve a capire l'uso personalizzato che ne faccio io, un piccolo giornale. Conosco l'esistenza delle 9000 pagg. di Informatica Libera, giro per forum, e ce ne sono di cose inutili. Per inesperienza ne posso mettere qualcuna anch'io, ma non ci posso passare l'eternità. Alcune informazioni sono sempre lacunose.

-Ho fatto l'account maildir indirizzato a una pendrive da 16gb(label:maildir per essere chiari), non appena montata (si monta a /media/maildir automaticamente) il sistema ci ha inserito quasi 1Gb di lost+found, guardandola anche con Gparted da smontata, delle 3 dir cur/, tmp/ e new/(?) neanche l'ombra, non so come configurare mail in uscita, l'ho fatto come nell'account reale(non so se è giusto o irrilevante, visto che tanto non se ne occupa)
Evolution aggunge un'altra bar nell'applet di attività e ivi dice operazione competata,
dopo chiuso l'applet, da errore nella barra di stato alla base della finestra.
Evidentemente ho sbagliato o non ho fatto qualcosa.

Sapete se Beagle aiuta?
Ho guardato anche le istruzioni e qualche altra notizia sul funzionamento di kmail con maildir ma non ho trovato niente di utile.
