Download the source from
http://code.launchpad.net/gnomenu/1.9/1.9.8/+download/gnomenu-1.9.8.tar.gz

Extract the file

Read the README file inside of the gnomenu folder

Make sure you have all dependencies installed through the package
manager (by default I think you only need python-xlib and
deskbar-applet, the rest should be there - still check though)

In the terminal cd to the gnomenu directory (wherever you extracted
before) and run "sudo make install" without quotation marks

When it is done installing, log out and log back in

Right click on a panel and choose "Add to panel..."

Find Gnomenu in the list and choose add

Finally, right click the normal Ubuntu menu and click Remove from Panel

If you can give me the output of

lsb_release -c

I can find you a repository which is way easier than compiling.

Thanks
