Compaq 6710b Video Driver problems

Asked by omrgrc

I have a compaq 6710B and running Jaunty 9.04 with an Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 integrated graphic controller [8086:2a02] (rev 0c). For some reason I can only get a resolution of 1600x1024 which leaves a black border around the screen. Before the upgrade I was able to get a 1680x1050 which was perfect resolution for that model laptop. I have try using the old intrepid driver by reverting back to intel-2.4, but that doesn't help, I end up screwing up the xserver can get login to a GUI. I have a friend who is having similar problems and I thought maybe could be a bug with Jaunty 9.04 and the intel GM954. Can anyone please shine some lights or point me in the right direction to resolve this problem. Thanks in advanced.

You could always add the resolution to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

This will force the resolution.

If you read:

http://www.io.com/~manojk/linux-tp600x/XF86Config-3.3.6

You will see where the resolutions are defined and can implement something similar in yours.

you will need to use:

(for gnome)
   gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(for kde)
   kdesudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

So that you r changes will stay (Users do not have write access to the file)

you

I had changed the configuration in the X11/xor.conf file, but I
mistakenly put the wrong resolution. It is resolved now, so I'll wait
for the intel GM965 bug to be fix to enable Compiz once again.

Thanks for the help and your prompt response.

No worries duder. Some people say xorg.conf is not used. This is not the case. If there is no config in there, then HAL will take over. Config in xorg.conf will override HAL.

Similar id /etc/network/interfaces which was used before all these fancy GUI apps to configure LAN. If you configure network connectivity with this file then network manager etc will do nothing and caan be uninstalled.

Do not be afraid of .conf files. They will often get you to your goal easier than any stupid GUI app can do.

I agreed. I use CLI most of the time with the exception of net surfing.

Thx again.
