Evolution freezing up during setup assistant
I am attempting to setup my accounts in evolution on my second laptop. (I run Kubuntu and Evolution on all my computers). The Evolution Setup Assistant keeps running extremely slow until it freezes up. When I open Evolution it takes approx. 1min for it to open. Then I enter in my info and forward to next step. Evolution takes several minutes to advance to the next step. I complete the next step and forward to advance...then it just freezes. This is a fresh install of Kubuntu. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Evolution and this is not resolving the issue. I even reinstalled the OS (Kubuntu).
All other programs, etc. are running fine. It is just when I open Evolution to setup,
Thanks for the help.

Ok, I managed to make it all the way through the Evolution set up process....(3hrs).
I rebooted just to see if the issue would resolve??? wishful thinking.
When I launched Evolution...it is running...it took 10 mins for it to completely load.
Any ideas on what is causing this? Everything else is working great. it is just Evolution that is running sooooo slow.
Thanks again

Try with this:
sudo apt-get install esound
Can you also check in Menu->Preferenc
In principle you don't need this in Evolution (unless you use sound cues, for instance to alert you if a new email arrived).

There seems to be a serious bug with the CalDAV Eplugin.
For the time being the only way to solve it is by removing the plug-in.
You can also safely remove esound, I don't think it is needed on a Kubuntu desktop.
sudo apt-get remove --purge esound
Let me know if you still have problems.

You can enable/disable plugins from Evolution (once it starts .....) going to Menu->Edit->Plugins
Is there any difference if you start evolution with the command:
evolution --component=mail
?

Thanks for the directions to the plugins.
I started with :
evolution --component=mail
I got the same response and error messages.
I disabled the CalDAV Eplugin and then started again. Got the same error messages, only without the "CalDAV Eplugin starting up ..." part.
I then disabled the 'Bogofilter junk plugin'. Restarted and recieved the same error messages, including the 'Bogofilter junk plugin'
I'm just thinking here, remember, i'm quite new at all this.....I was in the Adept Manager and looking into "evolution". I noticed even after the purge I did last night, that there are some architecture independent files still around. I think I understand it to be that these are apart of the OS package???
Would there perhaps be any benefit to remove these, purge evolution again...then reinstall everything. I'm just grasping here at process of elimination. Not sure if thats a good idea.....just interested to know where this break is.
Thank you Cesare

Perhaps you want to list these files here? And it would also help to say what adept is telling you about these files (obsolete? local? partially installed? failed dependancies? .....).

Cesare,
I found something interesting.....
I was installing my hp printer. I downloaded HPLIP. After HPLIP and CUPS was downloaded and restarted..the hp-setup utility is suppose to be executed.
During the execution, I got this very same error message (see below), that I've been getting with Evolution. It is respnding exactly as evolution is responding. Any hints on what could be happening. Apparently, it seems to be something besides just Evolution??????
Below is the BUILD INSTALL commands up to the error message:

No, sorry to disappoint you. These X error messages are "normal", they are just connected to the wacom tablet that is by default configured by the x server. You have no such tablet ergo the error.
What is not normal is this:
error: Unable to connect to hpiod.
error: Unable to connect to HPLIP I/O. Please (re)start HPLIP and try again.
I also don't understand why you needed to install HPLIP, it is installed by default in ubuntu!?

See....shows how new i am at this...
I would ask....What would these 2 programs have in common that would cause both to have identical issues during the execute to launch?
_______
>I also don't understand why you needed to install HPLIP, it is installed by default in ubuntu!?
Actually, I didnt know that. I went into menu->system settings->printers to set up my printer and then had this problem, like I having with evolution......
I went to the Ubuntu form and searched for a howto on installing printers......I just followed the howto.
http://
Of course now that you mentioned it...I noticed that the howto is a year old...."my bad" So I can remove this then?
By the way I did finally get my printer set up, through the menu->system settings-
the HPLIP in the terminal, which kept giving the error messages above.
Thanks for your help Cesare and your patients. Now...I guess were back to the evolution issue........
By the way, I have also posted this on the Ubuntu forum, thought I would give you the link as FYI.

>I don't think I understand what you mean.
>Perhaps you want to list these files here? And it would also help to say what adept is telling you about these files (obsolete? local? >partially installed? failed dependancies? .....).
I'll post this info right after dinner......
Just to help explain, .....what I was saying is, last night I did a
sudo aptitude purge evolution
After I did this, I went into menu->system->adept manager and did a search on evolution just to see what was out there.
What I found was files installed like :
libcamel1.2-10 -> the messaging backend for Evolution
libebook1.2-9 -> client library for evolution address book
all were libs.
I think there were like 6 or 7 of these
Thanks again

You are doing fine my friend, you'll be a Linux guru in no time :)
Re. evolution files, I understand better now.
You can remove these, if they are not used by any another package, simply with this command:
sudo apt-get autoremove
autoremove is used to remove packages that were automatically
installed to satisfy dependencies for some package and that are no
more needed.
Of course, if you have re-installed evolution there is no need to do this.
About the delay, I'm just wondering if it is related to the Gtk libraries and glade. What is the hardware difference between this computer and the others where you have no problem?
Can you also check and paste here the content of the .xsession-errors file? Its in your home directory.

Cesare,
Two questions...
1- Is there a command that will give a detailed list of all hardware installed?
I tried all the options of uname that I know ( -a, -s, -m, etc. ) ....that didnt give me what I needed.
Basically, these two laptops are identical. I wanted to see a detailed list just to verify that. I only know the basics of the two:
Compaq Evo N610c
Pentium 4M
512 memory
30 gig HD
2-Do you want me to paste the entire x.session-errors file ? Just wanted to make sure before I pasted the whole thing????
Thank you

1-There are many indeed. lshw, lspci, lsusb, etc. You can check the details and various options in the man pages (for instance man lspci).
You can also make an automatic comparison. For instance, lets say you save the output of an lshw command on PC1 to lshwpc1 and that of PC2 to lshwpc2:
lshw > lshwpc1 (on pc1)
lshw > lshwpc2 (on pc2)
Then you copy lshwpc2 to pc1 (usb key, floppy, ssh, email, whatever)
And you make a comparison with the command:
diff lshwpc1 lshwpc2 > comparison
You can then edit comparison and check what is the difference.
2- Yes pls. is it that BIG!?

>And you make a comparison with the command:
>diff lshwpc1 lshwpc2 > comparison
Once I do that I will let you know if anything is different. I do believe that they are identical units.....yet this will verify that.
Thanks for the commands!

Got it. Gimme some time to digest this, but I must say, there is really nothing that jumps to the eye. These two machines are practically clones......
Anything particular you remember about the 2nd machine? Something added or changed? Anything you can remember as different can help us here, even a tiny little program you gave no importance.....
BTW the one with the problem is yours=Mavsevo?

No, the one in question.
pamelasevo
There is nothing I can think of at this time...
Mine (mavsevo) has had kubuntu on it for a month and a half.
I just put Kubuntu on hers (pamelasevo).
They both were installed from the same live cd. I pretty much followed the same procedure installing on both units.
1st, installed from live cd.
2nd, updated through menu-> system->adept manager
3rd, installed Firefox
4th, configured wireless w/ http://
5th, Installed Evolution.....at this point is where I ran into issue with "pamelasevo". This is where I began to trouble-shoot and seek advise from ubuntu forum and here in launchpad. The rest of what I have done from that point is documented here in the thread.
The only thing I know I did different on mine (mavsevo) that I didn't do with pamelasevo is, before I used Evolution on mine, I had installed Thunderbird. Then I found out about Evolution a liked it better....(due to the cal, contacts, etc. that is intergrated like MS Outlook). So I then installed Evolution on mine.
With pamelasevo, I just went right to Evolution.
All of this has basically happened right out of a "fresh" install.
I think that is about it.
I really appreciate all your input and help.

Cesare...
This may mean absolutely nothing, yet,
>Anything particular you remember about the 2nd machine? Something added or changed? Anything you can remember as different can >help us here, even a tiny little program you gave no importance.....
I have thought of some very minor things that I noticed, for example...
When installing Kubuntu, some differences in default settings:
1- Konsole "Terminal Program" icon was, by default, in mavsevo's quick launch panel, it was not in pamelasevo.
2-In menu->settings the only program showing in mavsevo upon install was "KBFX configurator", in pamelasevo the only program showing was "PalmOS Devices"
3-In menu->graphics both units were showing identical programs, with one exception. pamelasevo has "Xsane Image Scanner", while mavsevo does not.
Like I said, very small details, yet may be something?

Thanks for all the info you gave.
You see, the problem is that Evolution is not a "native" Kubuntu application, it is using libraries which are (somewhat) part of the Gnome environment. In principle there is nothing wrong with that, and things should work out of the box (perhaps with some little hicups).
The only real difference between the two machines is that you updated pamela's BEFORE installing evolution, and yours also AFTER installing Evolution (since you updated yours in this month and an half)..
Perhaps there is a dependancy problem in some update, either of Evolution or of the Gnome libraries, and the right libraries are not picked up or not installed or not configured correctly.
The problem is that I don't think that reinstalling the libraries now will solve the problem (we can try of course).
Another possibility is to try reinstalling pamela's as yours, what I mean is, install Kubuntu 7.04 from disk, install Evolution then install the updates. Again, this may or may not work.
A last thing, you mention a Firefox installation, but, isn't Firefox a standard Kubuntu application!?

>Perhaps there is a dependancy problem in some update, either of Evolution or of the Gnome libraries, and the right libraries are not picked up or not installed or not configured correctly.
I was thinking this too. What I am unable to see and is puzzling me, this possibly being the case, is why then would I seem to be the only one, on this particular machine.
What would these two programs, and launching them have in common?
I say these two, because they are the only ones where I am aware that this "extreme delay in executing the program" exist.
>A last thing, you mention a Firefox installation, but, isn't Firefox a standard Kubuntu application!?
On the live cd I have, You could, as an option, install Firefox...along with Thunderbird and I believe it was Scribus, from a menu screen.
You could do this even if you chose not to install the OS....Kubuntu.
I actually installed Firefox from the repos ( adept manager ). It didn't come as a default / standard in Kubuntu. "Konqueror" was the default web browser.
Although, I have Edubuntu on my daughters laptop, and it came with Firefox and Evolution as preinstalled standard / default applications.

I believe it is the KDE Print Manager / setup utility. The path to it is: menu->system settings-
It is the program you use to configure your printers.
After clicking on ->add .............it acts like Evolution does, It takes several minutes, approx 5 to 7 mins, then it will launch.
Once it is launched, seems to run fine.
It seems to be just when you execute the programs to start / launch. Once they launch...seems to run fine (at least on the surface). It just takes 5 to 7 mins to get the programs to start. These two programs (Evolution and Print manager ) are the only ones I have yet to run across that seem to have this problem. There may be others and I just haven't found them yet.......hope not.

Open a terminal and run this simple command: top
If you can, click on Always on Top (it should be accessible with the right mouse button)
Now, launch the application, click on add and see which processes are listed in the top 2-3 rows.

And I gather that no matter what (wireless or ethernet) you still get the long delay?
We can try to enable debug reporting, this may give us a clue:
Open this file: /etc/cups/
Change the loglevel line from:
LogLevel warning
To:
LogLevel debug
Save and restart the cups daemon (sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart).
Try again adding a printer and check afterwards the content of the error_log file.

If it is still a long delay, please paste again the error_log file (just the additional data would do). Don't change yet the Loglevel until we finished with debugging.

Hey Cesare,
First, let me thank you again for all your incredible support!!!!!!!! ...
I wanted to add some info:
Asked Pamela to open evolution and set up some appointments, send some emails, etc. just to start getting familiar with the program, figuring once we get it starting correctly she can use it. Right now, she has been using Kontact.
Evolution crashed on her three times. Once, she was in the middle of setting an appointment in the calendar. One time she was adding a contact and the other, she was in memo.
It (evolution) just closed and shut down. Of one of the three, she managed to get an error message telling her that it had crashed and needed to be restarted.
Apparently, i was mistaken to think, once it finally opened.........that all was running ok. Doesn't seem to be the case. Obviously, there is more to it than just taking sooooo long....just to launch.

Now, hopefully all is well for printing, you can restore the logging to warnings only.
Concerning Evolution, did you do any kind of customization to your desktop, like a new theme?
Try installing this package and let me know if it helps:

On mine (mavsevo),yes, have tried several. I am currently using Beryl with Emerald Themes. Of course I had all my main programs installed and configured before i moved on to the eye candy.
On pamelasevo, no, not yet. These little quirks have managed to keep me busy.....LOL
I did:

Response was that I already have most current version installed. 0 installed, 0 upgraded.

First, try to start evolution like this:
evolution --component=mail --debug=
And paste here or to pastebin the resulting log file: evolution.log
While I'm looking at that, try playing with these options to see if any of them helps:

--disable-eplugin
--force-shutdown
I don't think they will but its worth a try.

evolution is a command, the others are options of that command.
You can check what they do by entering this command in a terminal:
man evolution
Scroll up and down with PgUp/PgDwn, or the arrow keys, and exit with q.

There is absolutely nothing in there that can be of any help.
Lets try something else. Like we did with the printer, open a terminal and give the command top (make that window always on top of the others).
See which processes are in the top positions while evolution starts up.

Also another little test we can do. Fire up evolution and when it is open, fire up another instance. Is this also delayed or almost immediate?

Ok, did top....
sent screen prints to you for review. Taken at random intervals from execute until open (approx. 3-4 mins)
Had evolution open, and opened another.
Evolution <2> opened immediately and defaulted to whatever window I had the Evolution <1> opened in.
For instance, If I had the first evolution opened in the calendar window, evolution<2> when opened would open immediately into calendar. If I had evolution<1> opened in the mail window, evolution <2>, when opened, would open immediately into the mail window.
NOTE:
I also shutdown the computer with evolution open during shutdown. Wanted to see if it would open back up after restart.
I did a restart (soft-boot) and did a complete turn-off and start back up (hard-boot)
It (evolution) loaded immediately on both occasions.

Good Morning My Friend.....
I think, perhaps I can make you smile this morning!
WE HAVE RESOLVE!!!!
I took the plunge and just decided to do it over.
>Another possibility is to try reinstalling pamela's as yours, what I mean is, install Kubuntu 7.04 from disk, install Evolution then install >the updates. Again, this may or may not work.
>
Thats what I did. I reinstalled from the Live CD. Once Kubuntu 7.04 was installed, I "immediately" went to the terminal, without doing any updates, and tried:
sudo apt-get install evolution
Once install was complete. Launched from desktop to check and then check, and then checked again..
Evolution is working as it should, NO 5 MIN. START UP.......... thank God and thank you.
I am, as I type this, doing the updates through Adept Manager for pamelas system. I hope after they are complete we will still have success. I believe we will, after all...mine (mavsevo) is still working after the updates.
What an odd occurrence????
Cesare, I want to sincerely thank you. You have been a trooper and a "patient" one at that. I appreciate you working through and forgiving me of my lack of knowledge as a noooB. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you.
I must say, I have learned quite a bit from you during these past 8 days.....WOW has this been going on that long.
Feel free to drop me an email from time to time, perhaps we can stay in touch?
THANKS AGAIN MY BROTHER!
One final question before I go.....
When I was installing the OS, while it was loading to begin the install , the following error messages came up:
178.980000 Buffer I/O error on device FD0, Logical Block 0
212.896000 Buffer I/O error on device FD0, Logical Block 0
Anything I should know about????

Updates complete and rebooted.
Evolution is still working properly. NO MORE DELAY.
Many thanks!

You are a bug cranking machine, aren't you!?
Jokes aside, this:
Buffer I/O error on device FD0, Logical Block 0
its not good.
I think it would be better to open a new ticket for this alone, we may help other people with the same issue to find a quick (I hope) answer.
In this ticket let me know if you DO have a floppy reader, or a bay where you can insert a floppy reader, and if not if can you disable it from BIOS.
See you soon :)

Hey Cesare....its great to hear from you!!
It has been awhile.
Yeah, Kubuntu is doing great. I have a few challenges (Blackberry sync and USB External Hard drive recognition issue) I will have to tackle soon, but absolutely no complaints.
I have really enjoyed having and learning this system. I'm not even sure of the last time I booted into XP??????
How are things on your end...or should I say your side of the world?
All is well I hope.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Take care my friend!
