Hello, kittenlover. :-)

I am dreadfully sorry, but your Lexmark X6575 printer is obsolete in Ubuntu.

Read this blog for a bit more information and reference, if you'd like:
http://ubuntuswitch.wordpress.com/2008/12/29/never-buy-a-lexmark-printer/

It really kills me to tell you this, as it could very well leave a bad taste in your mouth for Ubuntu, and Linux as a whole. If it means anything, I had to buy a new all-in-one because my old printers, scanners, etc. were obsolete. (They were old, though, even obsolete in Vista.)

I hope I've been of some help, even though it's not what you want to hear, and that I've solved this question.

Best to you, and good luck.

It does leave a bad taste in my mouth.  Ok, so what all in one printer would you recommend that will work with Ubuntu and Linux?  Thanks!

HP Printers have very good Linux support, and so do Brother printers. I have a Brother MFC 420CN and it works wonderfully.

Here is a database of all printers that are known to be compatible or incompatible with Linux:
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

If you find a printer, just search for it, and that will relay its compatibility.

I hope that I've been of some help! Please, could you mark this question as solved?

One last question - I looked at the compatible list. What if a printer is not listed at all? I am comparing the Brother MFC-420CN you recommended and an HP OfficeJet J4580. However, the HP is not on the compatible list. Does that mean it won't work with Linux? Thanks again.

It means that, as of now, there is no Linux support. :-)

Linux compatibility of HP printers can be checked at the HPLIP site:

"HPLIP (Hewlett-Packard Linux Imaging & Printing) is an HP-developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux."
http://hplipopensource.com/

HP OfficeJet J4580 is listed as working in Linux.
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_j4500_series.html

Note that the hplip package can be installed using Synaptic package manager as an alternative to downloading from the HPLIP website.

You will actually need hplip-gui (not just "hplip") to get the graphical configuration tools too.
