dual boot with Win XP Pro now no internet in Win XP

Asked by Jonathan Platt

I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 onto a dual hard-drive system. I did a full update of 301 files. Ubuntu 8.10 works really great and the dual boot program, grub, works as well. However, Windows XP Pro does not see the wired network connection that has always been there. Ubuntu connects to the internet without any trouble, but something has changed with the new operating system in the computer. I let Ubuntu reformat the smaller one of the hard drives 40GB (ST430810A IDE), but didn't touch the one with Windows XP Pro on it, 250GB (Hitachi non-IDE). I have looked thru all of the question and answer pages in this volume, finding problems with Ubuntu fixed, not with Windows. My kids use the Windows XP Pro for school and I just play with Ubuntu. Can anyone help me figure out why Windows keeps telling me the cable is disconnected when it isn't? Thanks!

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Ubuntu, Jonathan.

From what I remember of setting up an internet connection in XP, you do that via Network connections. I recall that there is a repair facility in that program.

I wish that would do it. I have tried everything I know of within Windows XP to be able to fix this. BTW-within XP (at least mine) there isn't a repair function - Vista has that. The point is, until I installed Ubuntu 8.10, Windows XP Pro worked just fine with the internet and the router. After installation, it tells me that the controller for the Ethernet is working, but the cable is unplugged, even though it hasn't been moved. I have tried to move it into different slots in the Netgear router. The router does not show there is a connection to this computer unless it is running Ubuntu. Again, how can this be? What setting in Ubuntu has caused this or is it something in the way the computer has been changed? I have racked my brain and I cannot see where this has occurred. A little more help?

Hello, Jonathon. :-)

Unfortunately, Andre is correct. Considering Ubuntu is on a separate partition entirely, you could get a Windows virus in Ubuntu, and it wouldn't affect either operating system. Using this same logic, because one operating system may not be functioning correctly, the other may be working flawlessly.

I am terribly sorry that your ethernet stopped functioning at such a terrible time, however, and I hope this has not left a bad taste in your mouth for Linux.

To fix it, have you tried disabling the connection, via (I believe) Right-Click --> Disable in Network Connections, and then Enabling it by the same means? Then, try resetting your router by unplugging it for ten seconds and plugging it back in. Then, you can restart your computer, and see if that helps. If the problem persists, I would call the Internet Service Provider.

I sincerely hope I've solved your question, and I hope I've been of some help.

Best to you, and good luck. :-)

Thank you, Bryan.  I really appreciate the help you all have offered.  However, I have tried all what you suggested below, several times in different sequences (definition of insanity...).  I would really hate to re-format the drive and lose Ubuntu, but my kids come first.  Would upgrading to 9.04 help any?

Any other ideas?

BTW - since Windows XP cannot see the Linux drive, how does one reformat the drive so Windows can?

Hmm... Well, as far as deleting Ubuntu, it won't help the ethernet problem at all. Upgrading probably wouldn't, either. Both of these things might be worth a try if you so choose, if only to eliminate that they are optional reasons for the problem to be ongoing.

As far as the drive goes, this website should help you:
http://mediakey.dk/~cc/use-a-linux-patition-as-a-drive-in-windows/

However, you need to be doing your browsing in a Windows machine. Perhaps download the driver to a flash drive, and install it that way?

I gave up Windows a long time ago, so I'm so sorry that I can't be of greater help. If you keep me posted, I will try my best to get you up and running again.

Best to you, Jonathon, and good luck.

I have had a look at an XP installation and there is indeed a "Repair" facility in the Network Manager.

1. Settings, Network Connections, Local Area Connection - a right click will produce a menu with "Repair".
2. Check Device Manager, Network Adapters - to check that it is enabled.
3. You could also try a restore point.

For XP problems check the Windows knowledge base - this has nothing whatsoever to do with your Ubuntu installation and upgrading Ubuntu, reformatting the drive or uninstalling Ubuntu will not make an ounce of difference to how XP functions.

Thank you again for all of the help you have offered.  I will try the restore point.

Although, I was viewing my router home page and the front panel when the Ubuntu kernel was loading in.  The ethernet was activated shortly after the kernel started loading and operated fine.  Ubuntu turned it off during the shut-down process.  Windows isn't doing either.  When Windows is active, the ethernet (LAN) is there, but it says it is diconnected.  Even the router home page says it is disconnected if Ubuntu isn't active.

I know you are all tired of hearing about Windows XP problems, but is there a chance that the Ubuntu OS is turning off the ethernet system somewhere in the programming during shut-down and that Windows is just figuring it will be able to use it when it loads in but doesn't see it?  Like I said before, everything seems to be working in Windows XP Pro, just like it is supposed to - even the Device Manager says the Networking card is working properly, just that the cable is disconnected.

Should I be looking for an ethernet turn-off switch somewhere in Ubuntu that I can tell it not to do that?  I figure that if Ubuntu leaves the Ethernet network up during it's shut-down, then Windows will just inherit it when it loads in.

BTW - I looked at the "Repair" as well, but as far as I can tell, there has to be some kind of connection to repair before it offers you that option.  After I told it to disable the connection, it took three tries to get it to enable it, and then it gave me an error, saying that there isn't a connection to connect to.

Cheers!

Jonathan,

XP failing to connect to the internet has nothing whatsoever to do with your Ubuntu installation and upgrading Ubuntu, reformatting the drive or uninstalling Ubuntu will not make an ounce of difference to how XP functions.

I have had a look at the Microsoft Knowledge Base (this is where you should look for a solution) and 2 of the solutions offered are:

1. Disable the Network connection and then enable it.
2. Use the "roll back the driver" function.

When Ubuntu is switched to "off", all running processes, including the ethernet connection, are turned off sequentially. XP does exactly the same thing - except it does so without notifying you.

You could try to create a "new" internet connection in XP.

OK, thanks. I give up. I will continue to work with Win XP to try and solve it thru MS problem solving areas. It still grates on me, though, that everything worked just fine prior to installing Ubuntu and then it didn't. I didn't change anything on the hard drive that Win XP is controlling.

Thanks again for all the hard work you put into this. I appreciate your time and effort.

To blame the disruption to your XP internet access on the installation of Ubuntu on another hard drive is both illogical and unfair.

The event is most likely a coincidence.

Since the internet connection works in Ubuntu, the fault is very clearly in your XP installation.

Would you post back here, please, when you have restored your XP internet connection. I would be interested in knowing that Ubuntu has been exonerated from this undeserved blame.

I wish you success.

OK, I need to apologize, as Ubuntu has been exonerated. I installed an updated driver in XP and it came online instantly. I wish I had thought of this a week ago, but I am back up and running. Thanks again and I will continue to use Ubuntu as it has offered me a glimpse into a world that I would like to eventually work in. Ubuntu is pretty cool and I really like the ease of use. Take care, all of you!
