Kubuntu Network Manager has no connections

Asked by Terry Coles

After a problem that occurred when Chromium crashed the system, I got most of my system back by restoring the backup of my /home directory. However, my wired connection would not connect.

It was suggested that I remove and re-install all packages that I thought might be to blame and stupidly I did that with network-manager. As a result, I completely lost all network connections! I've been able to re-install the package using <email address hidden><package name>, but this failed to restore the connections. (There is nothing in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections, is empty and the Network configuration tool in KDE's System Settings dialog is missing.)

Is there a way to get this back, without a complete re-installation from the iso?

I forgot to mention that I am using Kubuntu 23.10. The package is network-manager_1.44.2-1ubuntu1.2_amd64.deb.

What kind of connection do you usually have? Wireless or cable or ...?

What output do you receive for the command (in a terminal window)
ping -n 1 8.8.8.8

Ethernet. I have a USB dongle for WiFi, but I rarely use it for this machine.

Anyway, this system has just burst into life after my son discovered that the Router was no longer serving up an Ethernet connection to the Powerline Adaptors that feed our TV. That was one hell of a coincidence, since the Ethernet link was working immediately before I broke this PC and not afterwards. I don't quite see how my actions, dumb as they were, would break Ethernet connectivity in the Router.

However, although I have network access, I still don't have the Network Manager icon in the Task bar or on the System Settings. So my original question is slightly modified; how do I restore the Network Manage icons?

I tried reinstalling the package systemsettings with no change.

I've now reinstalled plasma-nm which has fixed the problem.

If you have uninstalled packages that are part of the Kubuntu-Desktop environment, then this may also have uninstalled the "kubuntu-desktop" package. Re-installing that package should re-add anything missing for a standard Kubuntu desktop system.

What output do you get for the command
apt --simulate install kubuntu-desktop

 apt --simulate install kubuntu-desktop
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt needs root privileges for real execution.
Also, keep in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
kubuntu-desktop is already the newest version (1.435).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libnma0 pptp-linux
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 3 not to upgrade.

I only uninstalled network-manager, which presumably uninstalled plasma-nm since it was not needed if there was no network. I never touched anything else in the system, which now seems to be working OK.

I can now go back to working out why Chromium crashed the system in the first place.

If the problem with networking is solved, then you should set the status of this question document to "solved" by pressing the appropriate button on your launchpad question document. If you need help with the chromium crash, then you should create a separate document for that.

I looked, but couldn't find a button labelled 'Solved'. Where is it?

I was trying to gather data on the Chromium crash when this problem occurred. As soon as I have anything useful, I'll raise a bug report on the Chromium bug tracker.

The text on the button is "Problem Solved", below the big "Message:" box on your document https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/708444

I don't see that. I have three buttons; 'Propose Answer', 'Add Information Request' and 'Just Add a Comment'.

A thought. Perhaps because no solution has been proposed, I don't get the option to accept it?

That's weird. I've had a Launchpad account for years now, but it was asking for my Ubuntu One credentials. I obviously logged in as that originally, but somehow it picked up my lp account when I clicked on the link in the email.

I'll have to watch out for that.
