Much appreciate your quick response. Hoping I can provide you the info
you require to resolve
the problem. As an aged novice I find it exciting to try to resolve
problems, but my limited
knowledge allows me to fix only the simplest of errors.
As per your request I copied the Terminal output. Let me know if you
need anything else.

I am very astonished about your last output. It seems that the package "nala" interferes with the normal operations of the apt command, which is an important part of the package management system.
What is the output of the commands
which apt
command -v apt
/usr/bin/apt policy libcom-err2:i386

I could uninstall NALA apt if you think it is part of the problem.
I use it because I like the colored output etc.
Following is the output you requested.

I do not think that nala is part of the problem, it just hindered running one of the diagnostic commands that I needed for a suggestion for repair.
Open a terminal window and issue the following commands:
wget https:/
sudo dpkg -i libcom-
sudo /usr/bin/apt upgrade
and report the results

Strange. There is a file, that cannot be deleted. Apparently there are some special attributes set on it, but the first attempt to modify these attributes failed, too. I still think that modifying or deleting that file is key to solving your problem with updating.

I am sorry, but I am running out of ideas.
I have no idea, why that offending file cannot be deleted or modified.
Just a few further "guesses in the dark":
What output do you get for the commands
mount
sudo rm /var/lib/
sudo dmesg | tail

This doesn't give a hint to the root cause either.
I am sorry, but I do not know what to do next. I am at my wits' end.
Maybe somebody else has additional ideas.

Thank you for your persistence in trying to resolve this issue.
It is much appreciated.
If this was Windows, there are many options to delete files.
After thinking further I have a couple of options I will try.
I use the "PIKA BACKUP" app. My last Backup was Aug 9th, so I will use
the restore option and keep my fingers crossed.
The last option, I hope you can advise me on.
Reinstall the OS but hopefully maintain the data ( installed apps etc.)
Should I reinstall Ubuntu 23.04 (current) or 22.04.3 LTS
Thks again so much
Cheers
GL

If you have a recent backup, then trying to restore it, is a good idea.
Reinstalling the operating system, but keeping the installed applications as they are, is not possible.
The usual approach is creating backup copies of all data that should be kept to an external medium (e.g USB disk or USB tick), then reinstalling the operating system and the applications, and finally restoring the data.
If you include your personal settings in the backup and restore process, then the application settings should be similar to what they were.
Whether you should install Ubuntu 22.04 or 23.04 is somewhat a personal decision.
22.04 is quite solid, and supported until the year 2027.
23.04 has some new features (e.g. needed for very new hardware), but support ends in January 2024; it will be required to do an upgrade to Ubuntu 23.10 within the coming months, and then an upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 (when 23.10 and 24.04 will be published).
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Grant Loughran for more information if necessary.
