Where on the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS cd is the source code stored?

Asked by bcmpinc

Recently I tried to find the source code of a GPL2 licensed application on the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS cd, however I could not find it. To conform to the GPL license it should be somewhere on the cd, so, where can I find the source code of the applications on the cd?

Usually the source code of the packages included in the installation cds are not in the cd itself for space on disc concerns.

But the source code of the applications can be found on the source repositories that you can use to build them with apt.

I missed the line on the cd-package: "Source code for Ubuntu (...) can be ordered from Canonical at the cost of the media and shipping."

Though, this would imply that I can't just download an image of the ubuntu cd, burn it and give it away. I would also need to give them the source code or a written receipt stating that I can give them the source code for at least the next 3 years.

Also sharing copies of the cd is only allowed when I also make a copy of the cd-package. That's not really clear from the text of the cd-package.

See section 3 part c in the GPLv2 -- you can pass on the offer for
source code that you received to the person you give the ubuntu CD.
