Open a terminal: [ctl+alt+t] sudo apt install winetricks [enter]
Then: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade [enter]

winetricks is a simple tool to work around common problems in Wine.

Then reboot

or ->open the Ubuntu Software -> search box top left -> type: wine -> click wine tricks -> install
reboot

This was the first time i have used terminal successfully . I do not do well with teck nomenclature. The issues are I can not open firefox whichis my default browser. I also have opera browser and it works fine. Ubuntu software does not open. my email does open but does not open anything that needs the browser. The only reason i mentioned it was the time line, I installed wine and found firefox not working the next day.I do realize the two events may not be linked.

Sorry Bernard I did not mean to snub you. I was trying stuff and did not
see your reply. I think the problem is actually in firefox.I will keep
your solution but I am going to try fixing the browser first. Thanks for
your input I will let you know what works.

You should check for updates on your computer Firefox has regular updates.
Currently on Firefox 108.0.1

If you run:

firefox

in a terminal, do you get any useful output?

If both firefox and ubuntu-software are failing, but most other programs are working, then this may indicate a problem in the snap environment on your system.

What output do you receive for the command (to be executed in a terminal window)

snap version

sorry I can not say helped.
