Sudden loss of sound some weeks ago

Asked by nigel brown

I have a Creative Audigy Fx sound card which worked fine for some years. One day I found I had no sound and I assumed the card had failed. I got sound back by plugging the speakers into the front headphone jack. This was perfectly satisfactory for at least a year. Then one day that failed too. I bought a new Creative sound card , the same as the one I'd installed originally. That didn't work. I tried following bobjohnson's instructions in the Terminal. That didn't work. I recently updated to Ubuntu 22.04 , hoping that might solve the problem, but it didn't. Can you suggest how I might solve this problem, please.

Thanks Manfred. It will take me some time to work through all this . You
have always successfully helped me in the past , and I'm pretty
confident you will solve my problem again . I know I am a bit of a twit
when this type of problem emerges. I will post when the problem is
solved . I continue to broadcast the value of Ubuntu to those I know
when the occasion arises. Unfortunately they are mostly even more
ignorant about computer operating systems than me.

If you give the output of step 3 then it'll give a lot of information about the sound systems

I have worked my way carefully through Step 1 but that hasn't worked. I
don't think I made any mistakes as I used copy and paste and went
through the procedures methodically.

I am now trying to do Step 2. In the Terminal I open the search box and
type in for more Apps etc, but when I press enter nothing happens . What
am I doing wrong ,please
