Canon Pixma TS 5000 prints images, not text

Asked by Alan Baker

My Canon printer works fine on Windows 7 but on my dual boot (Ubuntu 20.04.02 LTS) does not print text (any colour), prints images only. I have install cnijfilter2 and scangearmp2, and ts5000 is in the ppd folder. The printer shows as being installed (actually a few different versions appear as I have tried to install it a few times using different methods.
Do I need to clear out the clutter (how?) and try again? Any other suggestions appreciated.

Hi Bernard,

Thanks for this.  I have installed all the cups, lib and gutenprint
apps.  However, when I try "sudo apt-get install amd" this is the result:
alan@alan-HPProDesk-600-G1-TWR:~$ sudo apt-get install amd64
[sudo] password for alan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package amd64
alan@alan-HPProDesk-600-G1-TWR:~$

How do I download and install the necessary architecture.  I tried to
find where amd64 might reside on the computer.  I though I might install
the individual files there.  However, I could not find it.

Any other help really appreciated.

Alan

This is the AMD64 Architecture- Printer Driver for Glutenprint.
My bad I should of requested what architecture you have on your computer for driver selection.

Hi Bernard,

I checked my packages using dpkg -s and attached is the result.

I also went to the site below (Download Page for
printer-driver-gutenprint_5.3.3-4_amd64.deb on AMD64 machines) and tried
to install as directed. Below is the result.

alan@alan-HPProDesk-600-G1-TWR:~$ sudo apt-get deb
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu focal main
[sudo] password for alan:
E: Invalid operation deb
alan@alan-HPProDesk-600-G1-TWR:~$ sudo apt-get
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu focal main
E: Invalid operation http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu
alan@alan-HPProDesk-600-G1-TWR:~$

As you can see, I tried without the "deb" but no success.

Thanks for your efforts and patience.

Alan

If you installed a Glutenprint driver previously it will not install another of the same driver without removing the first driver. Was the first Glutenprint driver for AMD Architecture ?

To remove unnecessary files. You could open Terminal and run: sudo apt autoremove

Hi Bernard,

I have run autoremove, and then re-run the command to get focal main.
Copy of terminal below.

alan@alan-HPProDesk-600-G1-TWR:~$ sudo apt autoremove
[sudo] password for alan:

I removed cups via the terminal and powered off. I re-powered up, and did auto-clean and powered off. I restarted and re-installed cups. I then re-started, and then checked the list of files on my computer against the driver for AMD64 Architecture. They were all present. I then added the printer, double checking each move. I then re-started, and tried to print. The result is that it does now print text, but it is faint and not usable. There is nothing wrong with the printer as it does print quite well when I am running Windows.
I am thinking of doing a re-installation of Ubuntu with the printer attached as someone else solved their problem doing that. Question is, what is the best way of doing that to save my current set up. I do have my documents on a separate disc on the computer, so that is not a concern, just that to do a bare re-install would mean also re-loading the various programs I use and setting them all up again from scratch. All suggestions will be helpful.
